Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

I stared at the photograph for nearly five minutes.
My mother.
Mara.
The hospital entrance.
And Brielle standing behind them.
The woman I was supposed to marry.
The woman everyone called perfect.
The woman who smiled at me every day while hiding a secret that could destroy my entire life.
I felt something inside me collapse.
Not because I discovered betrayal.
Because I realized how carefully it had been planned.
This was not one lie.
This was an entire system built around keeping me ignorant.
“Adrian?”
Mara’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
She was watching my face.
She already knew what I was thinking.
“Brielle knew.”
It wasn’t a question.
Mara slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
My jaw tightened.
“How long?”
“From the beginning.”
The apartment suddenly felt freezing.
I looked toward the four boys.
They were playing quietly on the floor.
Completely unaware that adults had spent years controlling their lives.
“How?”
Mara sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“When I was pregnant, I tried calling you.”
“I called your office.”
“Your apartment.”
“Your assistant.”
“I left messages.”
My chest tightened.
“I never received anything.”
“I know.”
“Because someone made sure I didn’t.”
She looked at me.
“Your mother intercepted everything.”
I walked toward the table.
My fists clenched.
“Why would Brielle help her?”
Mara laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“Because Brielle wanted what your mother wanted.”
“What?”
“The Whitaker name.”
I looked away.
Brielle had always seemed supportive.
Patient.
Elegant.
Understanding.
Now every memory felt suspicious.
The first time we met.
The family dinners.
The conversations about marriage.
Everything.
“She knew you loved me.”
Mara’s words were quiet.
I froze.
“What?”
“She knew.”
“She knew I was the person you wanted.”
I didn’t answer.
Because she was right.
Before Brielle.
Before business.
Before family expectations.
There was Mara.
The only woman who ever made me feel like Adrian instead of Whitaker.
“She believed I was a threat.”
Mara continued.
“So she helped remove me.”
My phone suddenly rang.
I looked at the screen.
Brielle.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Mara looked at me.
“Answer.”
I hesitated.
“What do I say?”
“The truth.”
I accepted the call.
“Adrian.”
Her voice sounded gentle.
Almost worried.
“I heard you canceled everything.”
“Yes.”
“Your mother said you were upset.”
I stayed silent.
“Is this about Mara?”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“You knew.”
Silence.
A long silence.
Then:
“I knew what?”
I laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“Don’t do that.”
“Don’t pretend.”
“Adrian…”
“You were at the hospital.”
The silence became heavier.
“How did you know that?”
I looked at the photograph.
“Because I have proof.”
For the first time, her voice changed.
“You’re misunderstanding.”
“Am I?”
“Yes.”
“She was unstable.”
My eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“Mara was emotional.”
“She wanted to trap you.”
My anger exploded.
“Trap me?”
“Yes.”
“She wanted your money.”
I looked at Mara.
The woman who slept in storage rooms.
The woman who raised four children alone.
The woman who never asked me for anything.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I expect you to remember who she is.”
“No.”
“I remember who she is.”
“And I remember who you are.”
Brielle became silent.
Then her voice turned colder.
“Adrian.”
“You have no idea what you are doing.”
“Maybe.”
“But I know what I’m not doing.”
“What?”
“Marrying someone who helped destroy my family.”
I ended the call.
Mara looked at me.
“You didn’t have to defend me.”
“Yes.”
“I did.”
A small smile appeared on her face.
The first real smile I had seen in six years.
But before either of us could say anything…
My security alarm went off.
Everyone froze.
My assistant called immediately.
“Adrian.”
“Someone entered your office.”
“What?”
“The private office at Whitaker Tower.”
“Who?”
A pause.
Then:
“We don’t know.”
“But they left something behind.”
“What?”
My assistant swallowed.
“A photograph.”
“What photograph?”
Another pause.
“Your mother.”
“And Mara.”
“Together.”
“Twenty years ago.”
My heart stopped.
Twenty years ago?
Before I even met Mara.
Before any of this.
“Send it to me.”
The image arrived seconds later.
And the moment I saw it…
I knew this was bigger than my mother trying to protect my engagement.
Because standing beside my mother and a younger Mara…
Was my father.
May you like
Alive.
And holding a baby.
