Chapter 2 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

I canceled my engagement announcement at 4:18 PM.

My assistant thought I had lost my mind.

My mother thought I had been manipulated.

Brielle thought Mara was responsible.

But nobody understood the truth.

I wasn’t choosing Mara.

I wasn’t choosing the children.

I was choosing answers.

“Cancel everything.”

My assistant remained silent.

“Adrian?”

“The engagement dinner.”

“Your mother already invited everyone.”

“I know.”

“She will be furious.”

“She can be.”

The silence afterward was uncomfortable.

My assistant had worked for me for eight years.

She knew one thing.

I never changed plans.

Never.

“Are you sure?”

I looked toward the empty street where Mara’s car disappeared.

“Yes.”

“I’m sure.”

After hanging up, I drove to my Tribeca apartment.

The same apartment I had purchased after Mara left.

The same place where I spent thousands of nights trying to understand why someone I loved could disappear.

When I opened the door, the apartment felt different.

Because for the first time in six years…

I wasn’t alone.

Mara sat on the couch.

The four boys sat together on the floor.

They looked small inside my massive apartment.

Too small.

The silence was unbearable.

I closed the door.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Mara stood.

“We need to talk.”

“Yes.”

“We need rules.”

I almost laughed.

“Rules?”

“Yes.”

“Because you think I’m going to take them away?”

Her eyes hardened.

“I don’t know what you’re going to do.”

“I don’t know you anymore.”

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

Because I knew exactly what she meant.

Six years changed everything.

“I would never hurt them.”

“You don’t know them.”

“I’m trying to.”

She looked at the boys.

Then back at me.

“They are not a mystery.”

“Adrian.”

“They are your sons.”

The room became silent.

The words landed like an explosion.

My heartbeat stopped.

“What did you say?”

Mara closed her eyes.

“I said they are your sons.”

I couldn’t move.

I had imagined every possible answer.

Except that one.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Six years?”

“Yes.”

“You knew I had children?”

“Yes.”

My voice became colder.

“Why?”

Mara looked away.

And for the first time…

I saw fear.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Fear.

“Because I was told you didn’t want them.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Your mother came to the hospital.”

My blood ran cold.

“She told me everything.”

I stepped closer.

“What did she tell you?”

“That you chose your family.”

“That you chose your company.”

“That you wanted nothing to do with a woman who would damage your future.”

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

“She showed me documents.”

“What documents?”

“Legal agreements.”

“Fake custody papers.”

“Letters.”

My hands tightened.

“My mother would never do that.”

Mara laughed bitterly.

“You still defend her.”

I didn’t answer.

Because part of me knew.

My mother was powerful.

She was ruthless.

But this?

This was something else.

Milo suddenly spoke.

“Are you our dad?”

I looked at him.

The question destroyed every wall I had built.

I walked slowly toward him.

“I don’t know.”

The boy’s expression changed.

“But I want to know.”

He studied me.

Then nodded.

“You look like us.”

A painful smile appeared on my face.

“Yes.”

“I noticed.”

The other boys giggled.

For the first time that night…

I smiled.

Then my phone rang.

The screen showed one name.

Mother.

Mara saw it.

“Answer it.”

I hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because you need to hear how she explains this.”

I accepted the call.

“Adrian.”

Her voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“You canceled tonight.”

“Yes.”

“Because of her?”

I said nothing.

My mother continued.

“Mara Bennett has always been good at creating drama.”

My eyes moved toward Mara.

She looked hurt.

“Mother.”

“Do not let emotions destroy your future.”

“Did you know Mara had children?”

Silence.

Only three seconds.

But three seconds were enough.

I knew.

She knew.

“Adrian…”

“Did you know?”

Her voice changed.

“You don’t understand the situation.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Another silence.

Then she said:

“You need to come home.”

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“No.”

“I am warning you.”

“About what?”

“About believing a woman who already betrayed you once.”

I looked at Mara.

Then at the four boys.

“No.”

“I think someone betrayed me.”

And I ended the call.

But I didn’t know the worst part yet.

Because ten minutes later…

Someone knocked on my apartment door.

A man in a black suit stood outside.

Holding an old envelope.

“Mr. Whitaker.”

“Yes?”

“This belonged to Mara Bennett.”

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get it?”

The man looked uncomfortable.

“Your mother told me to deliver it only if Mara returned.”

I grabbed the envelope.

There was one sentence written on the front.

May you like

FOR ADRIAN.

THE TRUTH YOUR FAMILY HID.
