Chapter 9 - The Web Unravels

Within two hours, the federal building in Manhattan was buzzing with activity like a kicked beehive.

Harrison Vance, Evelyn Vance, and Michael Thorne were held in separate subterranean interrogation rooms.

I sat in Marcus Vance's corner office on the twelfth floor, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.

Lily was asleep on the office couch, wrapped in a warm wool blanket, safe from the storm outside.

"Your wife was brilliant, Daniel," Marcus said, leaning back against his mahogany desk.

"She knew that if she went to the local authorities, her father-in-law's political web would smother the investigation."

"So she built a digital dead-man's switch," I said, looking out at the rainy skyline.

"Exactly," Marcus confirmed.

"The moment Lily’s smartwatch registered an elevated heart rate combined with an emergency allergen alert, it triggered an encrypted transmission to my private server."

"That's why Evelyn was hunting for the second EpiPen," I realized out loud.

"She knew the secondary pen contained a tracking micro-chip Anna had installed years ago."

"The second pen wasn't just life-saving medicine," Marcus nodded grimly.

"It was the physical key to unlock the entire federal indictment."
