Chapter 13 - The Courtyard Trap

The elementary school courtyard was completely deserted, wrapped in a heavy, ghostly afternoon fog.
The autumn leaves swirled across the damp pavement as I stepped onto the brick walkway.
Claire Vance stood near the central fountain, wearing a long trench coat, a tablet computer resting in her hands.
"You actually came," she said, looking up with a bitter, hollow smile.
"Anna ruined my family, Daniel. My sister is going to prison for the rest of her life."
"Your sister tried to murder an eight-year-old child for money!" I yelled, stepping closer.
"It wasn't about the money!" Claire screamed back, her eyes wild with unfiltered rage.
"It was about control! Anna thought she was better than us! She thought she could take down my father's firm!"
She raised her finger over the tablet screen, hovering right above the final transfer authorization key.
