Chapter 5 - The Safe Deposit Vault

At seven in the morning, Detective Collins met me outside the Vault & Trust building in downtown Manhattan.

Lily was safe at the precinct, guarded by two plainclothes officers in a private room.

The air inside the bank vault was cold and smelled faintly of old paper and polished brass.

The bank manager turned his key simultaneously with mine, slid the heavy steel box free, and stepped back.

Inside lay a single leather journal bound with brass fittings, along with a stack of original financial deeds.

I opened the journal to the last entry written in Anna's elegant, sloping handwriting.

"If you are reading this, Daniel, it means Michael found the secondary account keys."

My throat tightened as I swallowed down the rising lump of grief.

"He thinks the trust holds three million dollars in liquid funds. He doesn't know about the secondary ledger."

"The money isn't an inheritance, Daniel. It’s a ransom log."

I flipped the page, revealing rows of wire transfers dating back five years before Anna’s death.

Every single transfer was signed by Michael Thorne, made out to an entity named Vanguard Apex.

Anna hadn't built a trust fund for our daughter.

She had been secretly recording a blackmail operation run by her own brother-in-law for nearly a decade.
