Chapter 15 - A New Sunrise

Three months later, the morning sun broke brightly over the Manhattan coastline, painting the harbor in brilliant shades of gold.

The trial was officially over.

Harrison Vance, Evelyn Vance, and Michael Thorne were all sentenced to lengthy terms in federal maximum-security penitentiaries.

Claire Vance had accepted federal immunity, delivering the final testimony that permanently dismantled her father’s corrupt network.

I sat on a wooden bench overlooking the calm water of Central Park, holding a warm cup of coffee.

Lily ran across the green lawn ahead of us, her cheeks flushed with healthy color, laughing as she chased a golden retriever puppy.

Detective Sarah Collins walked up, sitting beside me on the bench and setting down a small paper bag.

"The federal court officially closed the estate files this morning, Daniel," Sarah said, smiling softly.

"The trust fund is fully secured, clear of any legal liens, and completely under your sole guardianship."

I looked out at my daughter, her clear, happy laughter ringing out crisp and bright against the clear morning air.

The shadow that had hung over our lives for two dark years was finally gone, completely burned away by the truth.

I reached down, pulled Anna’s silver locket from under my collar, and clicked it open to look at her smiling picture.

"We did it, Anna," I whispered into the morning breeze.

I snapped the locket shut, held Lily’s small hand as she ran back to me, and walked forward into the bright, safe future we had fought so hard to reclaim.
