Chapter 6 - THE SILENT WITNESS

Rachel Peterson was alive.
Barely.
She had spent eight months in a long-term care facility after what police originally believed was an accidental overdose.
Michael did not believe in accidents anymore.
Neither did Daniel.
Detectives reopened the file.
Robert Crane was questioned.
He denied everything.
He claimed the payment from Vanessa was for private educational consulting.
He claimed Rachel Peterson had emotional problems.
He claimed he had no knowledge of abuse.
Michael wanted to hit him.
Daniel stopped him from even going near the school.
“Don’t give them anything they can use against you.”
Michael paced inside Daniel’s office.
“He knew.”
“I know.”
“He saw my daughter every day.”
“I know.”
“He helped Vanessa bury it.”
“Then we prove it.”
Michael looked at him.
“How?”
Daniel held up a flash drive.
“Rachel.”
Police had recovered a small backup drive from her apartment.
It contained emails.
One was to a state child welfare investigator.
She had never sent it.
Michael read the draft.
I believe Lily Carter is being physically abused by her mother.
School administration has discouraged reporting.
Principal Robert Crane warned me that accusing Vanessa Carter could destroy my career.
Michael gripped the paper.
There was another email.
I have photographs and a recording.
The recording was missing.
Police searched her cloud accounts.
Nothing.
Then Ethan surprised everyone.
During a child advocacy interview, he mentioned a “blue phone.”
Michael asked him about it later.
“Whose phone?”
“Mrs. Peterson’s.”
“How do you know?”
“She gave it to Lily.”
Michael turned toward his daughter.
Lily looked terrified.
“She told me to hide it.”
“Where?”
Lily stared at the floor.
“Mommy found it.”
Michael felt his stomach drop.
“What happened?”
“She got really mad.”
“Where is the phone now?”
Lily whispered.
“I don’t know.”
Then she looked toward the backyard.
Michael followed her gaze.
“Lily?”
“She threw something in the pond.”
Behind their house sat a decorative pond.
Michael had installed it three years earlier.
He called police.
A recovery team searched the water.
Two hours later, they found a damaged blue phone buried in mud near the rocks.
The device barely worked.
A forensic technician managed to recover part of one audio file.
Michael listened beside Daniel.
Rachel’s voice came first.
“Lily, tell me what happened.”
Then Lily.
“Mommy hit me because I spilled juice.”
Rachel asked.
“With what?”
“A belt.”
Silence.
Then another voice entered.
Vanessa.
Michael stopped breathing.
“What are you doing?”
Rachel responded.
“I’m documenting this.”
Vanessa’s voice became cold.
“You need to delete that.”
“No.”
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”
“I know exactly what I’m seeing.”
Then another voice.
Male.
Robert Crane.
“Rachel, come with me.”
The file cut off.
Michael stared at the technician.
“That’s it?”
“There’s more data.”
“Can you recover it?”
“Maybe.”
Michael hated that word.
Maybe.
That evening, he tucked the children into bed.
Ethan asked.
“Is Mommy coming back?”
Michael sat beside him.
“Not tonight.”
“Ever?”
Michael hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
Ethan nodded.
Then Lily appeared in the doorway.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“I remembered something.”
Michael stood.
“What?”
“The night Mommy threw the phone away.”
“What about it?”
May you like
Lily’s face went pale.
“There was blood on her shirt.”
