Chapter 12 - THE TRIAL

The case drew attention.
Reporters gathered outside the courthouse.
Michael hated every camera.
He hated strangers discussing his children.
He refused interviews.
His focus remained Lily and Ethan.
Vanessa eventually faced multiple charges connected to the assault on Rachel, child abuse, obstruction, and Emma’s death.
Robert accepted a plea agreement.
He agreed to testify.
Michael despised him.
Still, his testimony mattered.
Robert described the night Emma died.
He admitted helping Vanessa lie.
He admitted burying Rachel’s complaint years later because Vanessa threatened to expose his role in Emma’s death.
The prosecutor asked.
“Why did you protect her?”
Robert stared at the floor.
“Cowardice.”
Vanessa watched him without emotion.
Then Rachel testified.
Her voice was weak but clear.
She told the jury about Lily’s bruises.
About Robert’s threats.
About Vanessa coming to her apartment.
About waking briefly on the floor while Vanessa stood over her.
Michael watched Vanessa.
Not one tear.
Then Lily’s recorded forensic interview was played privately for the court.
Michael was not allowed inside for part of it.
He was grateful.
He had heard enough.
The defense argued Vanessa suffered unresolved trauma after Emma’s death.
They argued she lost control.
They argued the system failed her too.
Michael understood trauma.
He did not accept it as permission to terrorize children.
Then came the moment Vanessa took the stand.
Against her attorney’s advice.
She looked directly at Michael.
“I loved my children.”
The prosecutor asked.
“Which children?”
Vanessa paused.
“Emma.”
“Lily.”
“Ethan.”
“Did you hit Lily?”
“I disciplined her.”
“With a belt?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.”
“With a wooden hanger?”
“Yes.”
“Did you lock her in a basement room?”
“It was time-out.”
“Did you lock Emma outside?”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“She needed to calm down.”
The prosecutor walked toward the jury.
“Did Emma need to calm down when she was drowning?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Objection.
Overruled.
The prosecutor turned back.
“Did you open the door?”
Vanessa whispered.
“No.”
“Did you call 911 immediately?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Vanessa stared at her hands.
“I was scared.”
“For Emma?”
Silence.
“For yourself?”
Vanessa looked up.
Tears finally appeared.
“Yes.”
Michael closed his eyes.
That answer said everything.
After closing arguments, the jury left.
Hours passed.
Michael waited with Daniel.
Lily and Ethan were with a trusted caregiver.
Daniel handed him coffee.
Michael did not drink it.
“What if they don’t convict?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Then we keep protecting the kids.”
Michael nodded.
The courtroom door opened.
The clerk stepped out.
“We have a verdict.”
Michael stood.
His knees felt weak.
The jury returned.
Vanessa entered.
For the first time, she looked small.
The foreperson stood.
“On count one…”
Michael held his breath.
“Guilty.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Count two…”
“Guilty.”
Michael’s hands shook.
Then came the count connected to Emma.
The entire courtroom went silent.
The foreperson looked down.
“Guilty.”
Vanessa collapsed into her chair.
Michael felt no victory.
Only exhaustion.
Then Vanessa turned toward him.
Her lips moved.
He could barely hear the words.
“You’ll lose them too.”
Michael stared at her.
May you like
He thought it was just cruelty.
He was wrong.
