Chapter 5 - THE OTHER FAMILY

The next morning, Michael searched Vanessa’s closet.

He felt sick doing it.

This was still his marriage.

Still his home.

Still the bedroom they had shared for eleven years.

But everything had changed.

He removed boxes.

Shoes.

Winter clothes.

Nothing.

Then Lily appeared in the doorway.

“It’s behind the wall thing.”

Michael frowned.

“What wall thing?”

She walked in.

She pointed to the decorative panel behind a row of handbags.

Michael pressed it.

The panel moved.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a black metal box.

Michael stared.

“Jesus.”

Lily stepped back.

Michael lifted it out.

It was locked.

He brought it downstairs.

Daniel arrived before he opened it.

The police had advised Michael not to destroy potential evidence.

Daniel arranged for an officer to be present.

They opened the box with a locksmith.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

Bank receipts.

And one envelope labeled:

CARTER CHILDREN.

Michael stopped breathing.

Daniel noticed.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of school records.

Medical forms.

Notes.

Dates.

Behavioral comments.

And photographs of bruises.

Michael’s stomach turned.

Someone had documented the abuse.

Not Vanessa.

The handwriting was different.

Then he found a letter.

Dear Mrs. Carter,

I cannot continue pretending the injuries are accidental.

If you do not allow me to report this properly, I will go directly to the state.

Rachel Peterson.

Michael stared at the page.

“She tried to help them.”

Daniel nodded.

Michael picked up another envelope.

Bank records.

The $20,000 payment had gone to a consulting company.

Crane Educational Services.

Daniel cursed under his breath.

Michael looked at him.

“The principal.”

“Looks like it.”

Another photograph sat beneath the papers.

Vanessa stood beside a man Michael had never seen.

They looked younger.

Maybe ten years younger.

Between them was a little girl.

Around five years old.

Michael flipped the photo.

On the back:

Vanessa, Robert, Emma — Summer 2015.

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Robert?”

“Crane?”

“I don’t know.”

Michael searched the box.

There were more photographs.

Vanessa and Principal Crane.

Together.

Holding the same child.

Michael felt dizzy.

Daniel took one photo.

“What year did you meet Vanessa?”

“2016.”

Daniel looked at him.

“So these are before you.”

“Yes.”

“Did she ever tell you she had a child?”

Michael stared at the picture.

“No.”

Then he found a death certificate.

Emma Rose Crane.

Age six.

Cause of death:

Accidental drowning.

Michael sat down.

His hands shook.

Daniel looked at him.

“What is it?”

Michael passed him the paper.

Daniel read it.

Then both men looked toward the hidden box.

The story was becoming clear.

Vanessa and Robert had once been together.

They had a daughter.

The child died.

Years later, Vanessa married Michael.

Robert became principal at Lily’s school.

And when Lily reported abuse, Robert helped make the teacher disappear.

Michael whispered.

“This isn’t just about protecting Vanessa.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“No.”

Michael looked at the death certificate again.

“It’s about Emma.”

Then a police officer entered from the hallway.

He was holding another document.

“Mr. Carter?”

Michael looked up.

“We ran the name Rachel Peterson.”

Michael stood.

“Did you find her?”

The officer’s face was serious.

“Yes.”

Michael’s heart jumped.

“Where is she?”

The officer hesitated.

“She was found unconscious in her apartment eight months ago.”

Michael felt the room go cold.

May you like

“And?”

“She never woke up.”
