Chapter 4 - THE MESSAGE

Michael grabbed the phone first.

Vanessa tried to snatch it away.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

“That’s private.”

“So were my children’s bruises.”

She pushed him.

One officer stepped between them.

“Ma’am, back up.”

Vanessa’s breathing changed.

Fast.

Panicked.

Michael held up the screen.

“Who is R.C.?”

She said nothing.

The officer looked at the message.

“Can you unlock the phone?”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“No.”

Michael stared at her.

“You know what?”

“What?”

“You always hated being surprised.”

She narrowed her eyes.

He remembered Vanessa changing her passcode months earlier.

But she had once used Lily’s birthday.

Then Ethan’s.

Then their wedding anniversary.

Michael tried one possibility.

Incorrect.

Another.

Incorrect.

Vanessa smirked.

Then Lily spoke from the couch.

“Try 0614.”

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Lily.”

Michael entered it.

The phone unlocked.

Vanessa went pale.

Michael opened the messages.

Most had been deleted.

But the current thread remained.

R.C.: You promised he would never find out about Peterson.

Vanessa: He came home early.

R.C.: Then fix it.

Vanessa: I’m trying.

R.C.: If this reaches police, we both have a problem.

Michael felt a chill.

“Who is this?”

Vanessa stared at the floor.

The officer asked again.

“Who is R.C.?”

Vanessa finally whispered.

“Robert Crane.”

Michael knew the name.

The principal.

His daughter’s principal.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Michael felt a new kind of anger.

This was no longer one parent losing control.

This was concealment.

Planning.

Someone at the school had known.

The officer took notes.

“Did Principal Crane know about the alleged abuse?”

Vanessa stopped answering.

Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.

He read the messages.

His expression hardened.

“This is bad.”

“For her?”

“For everyone involved.”

Michael looked at Lily.

“How long has this been happening?”

Daniel put a hand on his shoulder.

“Not here.”

Michael understood.

The children needed medical exams.

Private interviews.

Safe space.

Police arranged for Vanessa to leave for the evening while the investigation continued.

She packed a small bag.

At the front door, she turned.

“You’re going to regret this.”

Michael stood between her and the hallway.

“No.”

“You think you’re saving them.”

“I am.”

“You’re destroying their mother.”

“You did that yourself.”

Vanessa smiled strangely.

“Ask Lily what she did.”

Michael’s stomach tightened.

“What?”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Ask her why I had to punish her.”

Michael stepped forward.

The officer moved between them.

Vanessa walked out.

That night, after the children had been examined at a pediatric clinic, Michael brought them home.

Lily had bruising on her shoulder.

Ethan had marks consistent with repeated gripping.

The doctor documented everything.

Michael barely spoke.

He made pancakes at midnight because Ethan said he was hungry.

Nobody ate much.

Around one in the morning, Michael sat beside Lily’s bed.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit.

He remembered Vanessa’s words.

Ask Lily what she did.

He hated himself for even wondering.

Still, something in Lily’s face told him there was another secret.

“Honey?”

“Yes?”

“Did something happen before Mommy started hurting you?”

Lily stared at the rabbit.

Michael waited.

Finally she whispered.

“I found the box.”

“What box?”

“The box in Mommy’s closet.”

Michael leaned closer.

“What was inside?”

Lily’s eyes filled with fear.

“Pictures.”

“Of what?”

Lily swallowed.

“Of another family.”

May you like

Michael felt his pulse jump.

“And Mommy was in all of them.”
