Chapter 1 - THE SCREAM BEHIND THE DOOR

Michael Carter came home three hours early.
Before he could even take off his coat, he heard his daughter scream.
“Daddy!”
Then came a sharp crack from upstairs.
Michael dropped his briefcase.
He ran.
Another cry followed.
“Please stop!”
His heart slammed against his ribs.
He took the stairs two at a time.
Vanessa’s voice exploded from the hallway.
“I told you not to move!”
Michael reached the bedroom door and shoved it open.
For one second, his entire world stopped.
Vanessa stood over their eight-year-old daughter with a wooden hanger raised in one hand.
Lily was pressed against the wall.
Both arms covered her head.
Six-year-old Ethan was curled beside the bed with his knees against his chest.
He was sobbing.
Vanessa turned.
Her face went pale.
“Michael?”
The hanger stayed frozen in the air.
“You’re home early.”
Michael stared at her.
Then at Lily.
Then at Ethan.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Vanessa lowered the hanger.
“They were misbehaving.”
Michael crossed the room.
Lily flinched when he moved too fast.
That nearly destroyed him.
He shoved Vanessa away from the children.
“Stay back.”
“Michael!”
“I said stay back.”
He dropped to his knees.
Lily immediately threw herself against him.
“Daddy.”
“I’m here.”
Her entire body shook.
Ethan didn’t move.
Michael reached toward him.
“Come here, buddy.”
Ethan stared at Vanessa first.
Only then did he crawl toward his father.
That tiny glance told Michael everything he did not want to know.
He pulled both children against his chest.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re making this look worse than it was.”
Michael turned slowly.
“What exactly am I making look worse?”
“They needed discipline.”
“With a hanger?”
“It wasn’t like that.”
Michael looked down.
Something dark showed beneath Ethan’s sleeve.
He gently lifted the fabric.
Bruises covered the boy’s upper arm.
Some were purple.
Some were yellow.
Different ages.
Different days.
Michael went completely still.
“Ethan.”
His son lowered his eyes.
“Who did this?”
Vanessa answered first.
“He falls.”
Michael looked at her.
“I didn’t ask you.”
“Michael, kids get bruises.”
He turned back to Ethan.
“Buddy, look at me.”
Ethan slowly did.
“You’re not in trouble.”
The boy’s lip trembled.
“Did Mommy do this?”
Silence.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“This is ridiculous.”
Michael raised one hand.
“Don’t.”
She stopped.
Then Lily whispered behind him.
“It wasn’t the first time, Daddy.”
Michael looked at her.
“What?”
Lily started crying again.
“She does it when you’re gone.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Lily, stop.”
Michael stood so fast Vanessa stepped backward.
“Do not tell her to stop.”
Lily clutched his shirt.
“She says we can’t tell you.”
Michael’s throat tightened.
“Why?”
“She said you’d leave us.”
For a moment, he could hear nothing except Lily’s breathing.
Every late meeting came back to him.
Every business trip.
Every text Vanessa had sent saying the children were fine.
Every time he had walked into a clean house, kissed his children goodnight, and believed the perfect picture in front of him.
He had been blind.
Vanessa softened her voice.
“Michael, we need to talk alone.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
He reached into his pocket.
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Who are you calling?”
“My lawyer.”
Her face hardened.
“You’re going to destroy this family over one bad afternoon?”
Michael stared at her.
“One bad afternoon?”
Then Ethan spoke.
His voice was so small Michael almost missed it.
“She locks Lily in the basement too.”
Michael’s thumb stopped above the screen.
Vanessa went white.
Michael slowly turned toward his son.
May you like
“What did you just say?”
And for the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.
