Chapter 10 - THE LOCKED DOOR

The video lasted ninety-three seconds.
It was enough.
Robert filmed through a kitchen window.
Outside, Emma stood barefoot near the back door.
She was crying.
The pool was visible behind her.
The ground was wet.
Robert argued with Vanessa.
“Open the door.”
“No.”
“She’s freezing.”
“She needs to learn.”
“She’s six.”
“So stop babying her.”
Emma banged on the glass.
“Mommy!”
Michael could not watch.
He stood and walked away.
Behind him, the audio continued.
A splash.
Then Robert screaming.
The recording stopped.
Michael leaned against the wall.
He felt physically ill.
Detective Collins paused the video.
“We can stop.”
“No.”
Michael turned.
“Finish it.”
There was one final recovered clip.
Recorded seven minutes later.
Robert held the camera low.
Vanessa cried hysterically.
“She fell.”
Robert shouted.
“You locked her out.”
“I didn’t know she’d go near the pool.”
“We need to call someone.”
Vanessa grabbed him.
“No.”
“What?”
“If they know I locked her out, they’ll take her away.”
“She’s not breathing.”
“Robert.”
“We say she wandered outside.”
Michael stared at the screen.
A six-year-old child was dying.
And her parents were protecting themselves.
Police arrested Robert Crane that afternoon.
Vanessa was arrested two hours later.
Charges related first to Rachel’s assault and evidence tampering.
Emma’s case required prosecutors to review older statutes and evidence.
Michael did not care what the charge was called.
He cared that his children finally knew she could not walk through the door.
That night, Lily asked.
“Is Mommy in jail?”
Michael sat beside her.
“Yes.”
“Because of us?”
“No.”
“Because of what she did.”
Lily considered this.
“Will she come home?”
“Not now.”
“Maybe later?”
Michael hated the uncertainty.
“I don’t know.”
Lily pulled the blanket higher.
“I don’t want her to.”
“You don’t have to feel guilty about that.”
She looked at him.
“Do you?”
Michael paused.
“Do I what?”
“Feel guilty?”
He smiled sadly.
“Every day.”
“Why?”
“Because I should have protected you sooner.”
Lily reached out and touched his hand.
“You came home.”
Michael nearly broke.
He looked away.
Then his phone buzzed.
Daniel.
Michael answered quietly.
“What happened?”
Daniel sounded tense.
“Vanessa’s attorney filed for custody.”
Michael stared.
“What?”
“She wants supervised access pending trial.”
Michael stood.
“No.”
“She’s claiming the children were coached.”
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“By me?”
“Yes.”
Daniel paused.
“And she has someone willing to testify that you were the abusive parent.”
Michael’s entire body went cold.
“Who?”
May you like
Daniel answered.
“Your mother-in-law.”
