Chapter 9 - VANESSA'S LAST LIE

Clara refused to go alone.
Detective Moreno agreed.
Vanessa sat behind thick glass at the county detention center.
No purple satin.
No diamonds.
No carefully styled hair.
Just a gray uniform.
For the first time, Clara saw how ordinary she was.
Vanessa picked up the phone.
Clara did the same.
“You won.”
Clara stared at her.
“This was never a game.”
“It was to me.”
“Then you lost before you started.”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“You think Adrian loves you now?”
“I don’t care.”
That answer surprised her.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You should.”
“I spent six years trying to be Noah’s mother.”
Clara’s expression hardened.
“No.”
“You spent six years trying to make me disappear.”
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
Clara continued.
“A mother doesn’t need to force a child to love her.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“You think you’re better than me?”
“I think Noah deserved better than both our war.”
For a moment, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she whispered.
“There’s something you don’t know.”
Clara waited.
“Adrian saw you once.”
Clara’s heart stopped.
“What?”
“After Noah was born.”
Vanessa smiled.
“He saw you.”
Clara felt the room tilt.
“You’re lying.”
“Ask him about the hospital elevator.”
Clara left immediately.
Adrian was waiting outside.
She walked straight toward him.
“Did you see me?”
His confusion lasted one second.
Then his face changed.
“The elevator.”
Clara knew.
Vanessa had told the truth.
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I saw a woman being taken downstairs in a wheelchair.”
“And?”
“I asked who she was.”
Clara’s voice shook.
“What did Vanessa tell you?”
Adrian looked devastated.
“She said you were another patient.”
Clara stared at him.
“You were ten feet away from me.”
“Yes.”
“And Noah?”
“In my arms.”
Clara turned away.
Adrian reached toward her.
Then stopped himself.
“I’m sorry.”
She wiped her eyes.
“You didn’t recognize me.”
“I had never seen you properly.”
Vanessa had arranged every meeting through intermediaries.
Clara’s pregnancy photographs had never reached him.
The hospital suite had been kept dark during the one brief moment Adrian was allowed near the mother before delivery.
Every detail had been engineered.
Clara finally understood the scale of it.
This hadn’t been one lie.
It had been hundreds.
Small lies.

Carefully placed.
Until two people could stand ten feet apart and never recognize the life they were supposed to share.
