Chapter 13 - NO MORE UNIFORMS

Clara stopped wearing the maid’s uniform.

The first morning she came downstairs in jeans and a soft blue sweater, Noah stared at her.

“What?”

“You look different.”

Clara smiled.

“Good different?”

He considered it seriously.

“Mom different.”

She laughed.

Adrian heard it from the kitchen.

He had been trying to make pancakes.

Trying was the important word.

Smoke drifted from the pan.

Clara stared.

“What happened?”

Noah whispered.

“Dad burned breakfast.”

“I heard that.”

“You were supposed to.”

Clara laughed again.

The mansion changed.

Not overnight.

But slowly.

Several staff members stayed.

Others left.

Adrian removed Vanessa’s photographs.

Not because Clara asked.

Because Noah did.

Margaret began visiting.

Carefully.

Respectfully.

She never demanded forgiveness.

That helped.

Mia enrolled in law school using a scholarship Adrian established in Evelyn Grant’s name.

Clara returned to nursing school.

She had been only one semester away from finishing when Noah was born.

Adrian offered to pay.

She refused.

He smiled.

“I expected that.”

“You’re learning.”

“I’m trying.”

Their relationship changed too.

They became partners first.

Parents.

Friends.

Two people learning the truth about each other after years of lies.

One evening, Noah fell asleep between them during a movie.

Adrian looked at Clara over his head.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Depends.”

“If none of this had happened…”

He hesitated.

“Do you think we would have had a chance?”

Clara looked at him.

“Six years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Maybe.”

Adrian smiled sadly.

“Maybe?”

“You were arrogant.”

“I’m still arrogant.”

“True.”

He laughed quietly.

Then Clara became serious.

“But I liked you.”

“I liked you too.”

They sat there.

Close.

But neither moved.

Not yet.

May you like

Some things deserved time.

And after losing six years, Clara had learned never to rush the moments that mattered.
