Chapter 5 - THE DOCTOR WHO TOOK THE MONEY

Dr. Samuel Keller had spent six years pretending he had forgotten Clara Bennett.
He hadn’t.
When Detective Moreno placed the photograph of Clara holding newborn Noah in front of him, he started crying.
“I knew this day would come.”
His confession lasted ninety-three minutes.
Vanessa had approached him months before Noah’s birth.
She offered money.
Then more money.
Then threatened to expose his gambling debts.
The plan was simple.
Keep Adrian and Clara separated.
After delivery, sedate Clara.
Transfer Noah into Adrian’s custody using forged documents.
Tell Adrian the mother had died.
Tell Clara Adrian had taken the child legally.
Then destroy anything connecting them.
But one nurse refused.
Her name was Evelyn Grant.
She secretly copied Clara’s original records.
That explained the documents in Vanessa’s blue box.
“What happened to Evelyn?” Clara asked.
Keller looked down.
“She disappeared.”
Clara felt cold.
“Disappeared?”
“She quit.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
Moreno leaned forward.
“Think carefully.”
Keller swallowed.
“Vanessa knew Evelyn had copies.”
Adrian stood.
“What did Vanessa do?”
“I don’t know.”
But his face said otherwise.
Moreno noticed.
“So help me understand.”
Keller closed his eyes.
“There was an accident.”
Clara’s stomach tightened.
“What accident?”
“Evelyn’s car went off a bridge.”
Silence.
Clara stared at Vanessa through the observation glass.
This was no longer just about stolen motherhood.
It might be about something much darker.
Then Keller added one final detail.
“Evelyn had a daughter.”
Moreno frowned.
“Name?”
Keller hesitated.
“Mia Grant.”
Clara stopped breathing.
She knew that name.
Mia had worked at Blackwood Manor for four years.
May you like
She was the quiet young woman who prepared Noah’s breakfast every morning.
And she had disappeared from work three days earlier.
