Chapter 14 - THE ROOM VANESSA LOCKED

Almost one year after the slap, renovation workers discovered a hidden compartment behind Vanessa’s former dressing room.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Clara.
Noah.
Adrian.
Vanessa had documented them for years.
But one photograph stood out.
It showed Clara sitting beneath an oak tree with three-year-old Noah asleep in her lap.
Adrian stared at it.
“I remember that day.”
Clara looked at him.
“You were home?”
“Yes.”
“I watched from my office.”
She turned.
“You did?”
“I remember thinking Noah never slept that peacefully with anyone else.”
Clara smiled sadly.
“He always liked that tree.”
Adrian put the photograph down.
“There’s something I need to tell you.”
Clara waited.
“I don’t want our future to be built on what Vanessa did.”
“Neither do I.”
“I don’t want guilt to be the reason you stay here.”
“It isn’t.”
“I don’t want Noah to be the reason either.”
Clara’s heart started beating faster.
Adrian stepped closer.
“I want you to stay because you choose to.”
“Adrian…”
“I love you.”
No dramatic music.
No expensive restaurant.
No diamonds.
Just the truth.
Clara stared at him.
“You don’t have to say anything.”
“Good.”
Adrian blinked.
Clara smiled.
“Because you talk too much when you’re nervous.”
“I am not nervous.”
“You’re terrified.”
He laughed.
Then she kissed him.
Softly.
Briefly.
When they separated, Adrian looked stunned.
“That wasn’t an answer.”
Clara smiled.
“Yes, it was.”
From the hallway came a small voice.
“FINALLY.”
They turned.
Noah stood there holding a soccer ball.
Adrian frowned.
“How long have you been standing there?”
“Long enough.”
Clara covered her face.
Noah grinned.
“Grandma owes me twenty dollars.”
Adrian stared at him.
“You bet on us?”
“Yep.”
Clara started laughing.
Adrian tried to look offended.
He failed.

For a family born inside a lie, the truth was beginning to feel remarkably ordinary.
And that was exactly what Clara wanted.
