Chapter 12 - THE TRIAL

Vanessa’s trial began seven months later.

The prosecution presented everything.

Forgery.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Medical misconduct.

Obstruction.

Witness intimidation.

Charles accepted a plea deal and testified against her.

Dr. Keller testified.

Mia testified.

Adrian testified.

Then Clara took the stand.

Vanessa watched her from the defense table.

The prosecutor asked one final question.

“What did the defendant take from you?”

Everyone expected Clara to say Noah.

She didn’t.

“She took time.”

The courtroom became silent.

“She took his first night home.”

“His first smile.”

“His first word.”

“The first time he walked.”

“She took every birthday where I had to stand ten feet away pretending I was only there to clean the room.”

Clara looked at Vanessa.

“But she didn’t take my son.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Because somehow, even without knowing the truth, Noah knew where he felt safe.”

Clara’s voice cracked.

“He found me anyway.”

Several jurors wiped their eyes.

The verdict came two days later.

Guilty.

Vanessa showed no emotion until the judge ordered her remanded.

Then she looked toward Adrian.

He didn’t look back.

She looked toward Noah.

He wasn’t there.

Finally, she looked at Clara.

Clara gave her nothing.

No smile.

No triumph.

No revenge.

Because the greatest punishment Vanessa could receive was becoming irrelevant to the family she had spent years trying to control.

Charles was sentenced separately.

Dr. Keller lost his medical license and received prison time under his plea agreement.

Several hospital administrators were charged.

The scandal destroyed careers.

It triggered investigations.

It changed hospital safeguards.

But Clara cared about only one thing.

Going home.

When she reached Blackwood Manor that evening, Noah ran outside.

“Mom!”

Clara stopped.

No hesitation.

No whispering.

No fear.

Mom.

May you like

She opened her arms.

And her son came home to her.
