Chapter 2 - THE LIE THAT BUILT AN EMPIRE

Richard Whitmore stood at the edge of the ballroom.
Calm.
Silent.
Almost bored.
But Gabriel knew his father better than anyone.
That expression meant danger.
“Dad…”
The entire room turned toward Richard.
The billionaire founder of Whitmore Industries.
The man who built an empire from nothing.
The man everyone respected.
And the man who told Gabriel his mother abandoned him.
Richard slowly walked forward.
“Everyone leave.”
Nobody moved.
The guests exchanged nervous looks.
Richard raised his voice.
“I said leave.”
Within seconds, the ballroom began emptying.
But nobody walked away without whispering.
Because they all knew.
Something enormous had just been uncovered.
Soon, only family members and trusted staff remained.
Richard looked at Elena.
His face was unreadable.
“Elena.”
Hearing her name from him made her freeze.
“You remember me?”
Richard didn’t answer.
Gabriel stepped between them.
“You knew she was alive.”
Silence.
That was the answer.
Gabriel’s jaw tightened.
“You knew.”
Richard looked at his son.
“There are things you don’t understand.”
“Fifteen years.”
Gabriel’s voice shook.
“Fifteen years I thought my mother left me.”
Richard looked away.
“She was protecting you.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
A sound full of pain.
“Protecting him?”
Everyone looked at her.
“You told him I abandoned him.”
Richard said nothing.
“You let my own son hate me.”
“Enough.”
Gabriel stared at his father.
“No.”
His voice became colder.
“Not anymore.”
For the first time in his life, Richard looked afraid.
Elena stepped forward.
“I want the truth.”
Richard looked at her.
“You don’t know what you’re asking.”
“Yes, I do.”
Her voice trembled.
“I lost fifteen years.”
She touched her chest.
“I lost my son.”
Then she pointed toward the mansion.
“And someone stole my family from me.”
The room went silent.
Richard looked at Margaret.
The old woman lowered her eyes.
That small movement told Gabriel everything.
They were hiding something.
“Tell me.”
Gabriel looked at Margaret.
“What happened fifteen years ago?”
Margaret hesitated.
Then she finally spoke.
“Your mother was supposed to inherit Whitmore Holdings.”
Valeria’s face changed.
“What?”
Margaret continued.
“Before Gabriel was born, Elena was named the successor.”
Gabriel looked shocked.
“But Dad owns everything.”
Margaret nodded.
“Because someone changed the documents.”
Elena whispered:
“Someone forged my signature.”
“Yes.”
A cold silence filled the room.
Gabriel looked at Richard.
“Who?”
Richard didn’t answer.
And that scared Gabriel more than anything.
Because his father always had an answer.
Except now.
He didn’t.
Suddenly, a loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
A security guard ran into the room.
“Mr. Whitmore!”
Richard frowned.
“What happened?”
“The family archive room…”
The guard swallowed.
“Someone broke in.”
Gabriel’s eyes narrowed.
“What was taken?”
The guard looked nervous.
“The original inheritance documents.”
Everyone froze.
Because those documents could prove everything.
Elena’s entire identity.
Her stolen inheritance.
The person who destroyed her life.
Gabriel walked toward the stairs.
“Call the police.”
Richard grabbed his arm.
“No.”
Gabriel turned.
“What did you say?”
Richard released him slowly.
“Don’t call anyone.”
The room went silent.
Gabriel stared at his father.
“Why?”
Richard looked at him.
Because for the first time…
He looked terrified.
“Because whoever took those papers…”
A pause.
“They know the truth.”
Gabriel’s heart sank.
“And they’re willing to kill to keep it hidden.”
Then the mansion lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A scream echoed from upstairs.
Everyone froze.

And when the emergency lights came back on…
Elena was gone.
