Chapter 7 - THE ROOM THAT HELD EIGHT YEARS OF LIES

The voice disappeared the second the emergency lights flickered on.

August stood completely still.

His hand was wrapped tightly around Elsie’s small fingers.

The mansion that had always felt like a fortress suddenly felt like a trap.

“Stay behind me,” August whispered.

Elsie nodded.

For the first time since she arrived, she wasn’t looking at him like a stranger.

She was looking at him like family.

Thomas Reed rushed into the hallway with two security guards behind him.

“August! Are you alright?”

August didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes stayed fixed on the dark hallway.

“Someone was here.”

The guards searched every room.

Nothing.

No broken windows.

No open doors.

No sign anyone had entered.

But August knew what he heard.

And more importantly...

He knew someone wanted him scared.

“Find Victoria,” he ordered.

One guard looked uncertain.

“Mr. Caldwell, she left the house ten minutes ago.”

August’s expression changed.

“She left?”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me?”

The guard nodded.

Thomas looked worried.

“August, maybe she was frightened.”

August turned sharply.

“No.”

His voice was cold.

“She was running.”

For eight years, August had ignored small details.

The strange explanations.

The missing information.

The unanswered questions.

But now everything connected.

Victoria didn’t act like someone who lost Caroline.

She acted like someone who was afraid Caroline had returned.

August walked toward the old east wing of the mansion.

The place nobody entered anymore.

Caroline’s room.

The door had been locked since the day they buried her.

The day August thought he buried his daughter.

He took out the small key Elsie gave him.

It fit perfectly.

Click.

The lock opened.

Elsie looked up.

“She knew.”

August stared at the door.

“She knew what?”

“That you would come here.”

The door slowly opened.

Dust filled the air.

Everything inside remained exactly as Caroline left it.

Her books.

Her paintings.

Her old guitar.

Her photographs.

August walked inside and felt his chest tighten.

It was like stepping into the past.

On the desk sat a small wooden box.

And on top of it was a note.

August picked it up.

His hands started shaking.

“Dad.”

Just one word.

But it was Caroline’s handwriting.

He opened the box.

Inside were documents.

A flash drive.

And a photograph.

August picked up the photo first.

His entire body froze.

It was Caroline.

Holding a baby.

A baby girl.

Elsie.

On the back of the photo was written:

“Dad, this is your granddaughter. I wanted you to meet her.”

August closed his eyes.

Eight years.

Eight years stolen.

Then he looked at the documents.

The first page made his blood run cold.

A legal agreement.

Signed by Victoria Caldwell.

The title read:

“GUARDIANSHIP TRANSFER AGREEMENT.”

August’s face hardened.

“Why would Victoria have a guardianship document for my granddaughter?”

Thomas stepped closer.

Then he saw the signature.

And his expression changed.

“August…”

“What?”

Thomas swallowed.

“This was created before Caroline disappeared.”

The room went silent.

August looked at Elsie.

Then at the papers.

Someone had planned this.

Someone had planned to erase Caroline’s life before she was even gone.
