Chapter 10 - THE TRAP BUILT FROM A FATHER’S LOVE

August stared at the photo on his phone.

For eight years, he had lived with one unbearable truth.

His daughter was gone.

He had visited her grave.

He had held her picture.

He had told himself there was nothing left to save.

But now…

Caroline was alive.

Somewhere.

Waiting.

His hands trembled as he zoomed in on the image.

The room behind her looked small.

Concrete walls.

A single window.

A metal chair.

She looked thinner.

Older.

But it was her.

The same eyes.

The same expression he remembered from when she was a child and refused to admit she was wrong.

“She’s alive,” August whispered.

Thomas looked at the message.

“August, this is exactly what they want.”

August looked up.

“What?”

“They know you’ll do anything for Caroline.”

August didn’t respond.

Because it was true.

He would walk into any trap.

Face any enemy.

Lose everything.

As long as his daughter came home.

Then Elsie stepped forward.

“Grandpa.”

August looked at her.

The little girl was holding Caroline’s ring.

“Mom said you would do this.”

“Do what?”

“Run toward danger because you love your family.”

The words stopped him.

Because they sounded exactly like Caroline.

August knelt beside her.

“Your mom knew me well.”

Elsie nodded.

“She said you were brave.”

August smiled sadly.

“But?”

Elsie looked down.

“She said you forgot that brave people also need help.”

For the first time that night, August realized something.

He wasn’t fighting only for revenge.

He was fighting to protect the family Caroline left behind.

He stood.

“Thomas.”

“Yes?”

“Get everything you can on Victoria.”

Thomas hesitated.

“August, if Victoria is involved…”

“I know.”

“And if she has people watching us?”

“I know.”

Thomas nodded.

“And what about the meeting?”

August looked at the message again.

“Tell no one.”

Thomas immediately shook his head.

“Absolutely not.”

August looked at him.

“This is my daughter.”

“And Elsie’s mother,” Thomas replied.

The room went silent.

“You walk into that place alone, and they get two people.”

August looked away.

Thomas continued.

“You don’t get to disappear too.”

For years, August had been alone in his pain.

But now someone depended on him.

Someone who called him Grandpa.

Finally, August nodded.

“Fine.”

He looked at Elsie.

“She stays protected.”

But neither of them noticed the small camera hidden inside the bookshelf.

Someone was watching.

And someone heard every word.

---

Three hours later, August arrived at the abandoned warehouse shown in the message.

No security.

No backup.

No weapons.

Just him.

The giant metal door slowly opened.

Inside was darkness.

“Caroline?”

His voice echoed.

Then a light turned on.

A woman sat in the corner.

Her hands were shaking.

Her face was tired.

But alive.

“Dad…”

August stopped breathing.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then he ran.

He pulled her into his arms.

And after eight years of believing she was gone…

August Caldwell finally heard his daughter cry again.

But the reunion lasted only seconds.

Because Caroline pushed him away.

“Dad…”

Her voice was full of fear.

“You shouldn’t have come.”

August froze.

“What?”

She looked toward the door.

“They wanted you here.”

A slow clap came from the darkness.

And Victoria walked into the warehouse.

“Of course he came.”

August turned.

His wife smiled.

May you like

“Because August Caldwell has always been predictable.”
