Chapter 3 - THE LETTER HIDDEN FOR EIGHT YEARS

August refused to let anyone remove Elsie.

Not his security team.

Not his assistants.

Not even Victoria.

“Everyone leaves,” he ordered.

The guests immediately began moving.

They knew when August Caldwell was serious.

Within minutes, the ballroom was almost empty.

Only four people remained.

August.

Victoria.

Elsie.

And the old family lawyer, Thomas Reed.

Thomas had worked for the Caldwell family for thirty years.

When he saw the ring, his hands started shaking.

“You recognize it,” August said.

Thomas looked away.

That was all the answer August needed.

“You knew.”

Thomas sighed.

“August…”

“No.”

August stepped closer.

“You knew something about Caroline.”

Victoria interrupted.

“This is insane.”

August looked at her.

“Is it?”

His voice was colder than she had ever heard.

“My dead daughter’s ring appears eight years later. A child says Caroline was her mother. And you’re the only person in this room acting like you already know what happened.”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“You’re letting a stranger manipulate you.”

Elsie quietly spoke.

“She wasn’t a stranger.”

Everyone looked at her.

“My mom said Grandpa would believe the ring.”

August’s breath stopped.

Grandpa.

A word he never thought he would hear.

“Elsie…”

He lowered himself to her level.

“Did your mother leave anything else?”

The little girl nodded.

“She gave me a letter.”

Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

“What letter?”

Too quickly.

Too desperately.

August noticed.

“Where is it, Elsie?”

The girl reached into her small backpack.

She pulled out a folded envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

But with a name written on the front.

A name that made August’s heart stop.

AUGUST.

His hands trembled as he took it.

The seal was broken.

Someone had opened it before.

August looked at Victoria.

“You read this.”

Victoria said nothing.

And that silence confirmed everything.

August slowly opened the letter.

The first sentence destroyed the last eight years of his life.

“Dad, if you are reading this, it means Victoria failed to keep my truth buried.”

August looked up.

May you like

Victoria’s face had gone completely white.

And inside the letter was the secret Caroline had died trying to reveal.
