Chapter 14 - THE FALL OF VICTORIA CALDWELL

The next morning, the world woke up to chaos.
News stations.
Financial reports.
Social media.
Everyone was talking about Caldwell Holdings.
But not because of success.
Because someone had leaked information.
Millions of dollars.
Hidden accounts.
Corporate fraud.
And the name at the center of it all.
Victoria Caldwell.
Victoria sat inside her mansion watching the news.
Her face was emotionless.
Until her phone rang.
Richard.
She answered.
“What happened?”
His voice sounded nervous.
“The files are spreading.”
Victoria stood.
“Stop them.”
“We can’t.”
She froze.
“What do you mean?”
“August already sent copies to investigators.”
For the first time...
Victoria looked afraid.
“You’re lying.”
“I’m not.”
The call ended.
Victoria slowly sat down.
Eight years of planning.
Destroyed in one night.
Meanwhile, August stood in his office with Caroline and Elsie.
The same office where he once ignored Caroline’s pain.
Now he was listening.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Caroline looked at him.
“For what?”
“For not believing you.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Dad…”
“I should have protected you.”
Caroline shook her head.
“You were lied to.”
“But I should have seen it.”
A long silence followed.
Then Elsie walked between them.
She grabbed both their hands.
“My mom said families can make mistakes.”
August looked down.
“She said that?”
Elsie nodded.
“She said the important thing is what people do after.”
For the first time in years...
August smiled.
But the moment was interrupted.
Thomas entered.
“August.”
Everyone looked up.
“What happened?”
“Victoria disappeared.”
August’s expression changed.
“What?”
“She left before authorities arrived.”
Caroline became worried.
“She won’t run forever.”
Thomas nodded.
“But there is something else.”
“What?”
He placed a folder on the desk.
“We found another account.”
August opened it.
Inside was a list.
Names.
Payments.
People Victoria had worked with.
Then one name appeared.
A name that shocked everyone.
Caroline stepped closer.
“No…”
August looked at her.
“What?”
She whispered:
“That person was supposed to be my friend.”
August looked at the page.
And realized Victoria had not acted alone.
There was another person.
Someone close.
Someone they trusted.
Then the office door opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Crying.
Holding old photographs.
“I know you hate me.”
Caroline froze.
“Emma?”
The woman looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
August stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
Emma looked down.
“I was there the night Caroline disappeared.”
The room went silent.
May you like
“And I know the truth.”
