Chapter 8 - THE FATHER NOAH KNEW

Ethan dropped beside Noah and pulled him into his arms.

Daniel remained several feet away.

The word “Daddy” echoed painfully inside his chest.

But Noah was frightened, cold, and confused.

Daniel refused to make the moment about himself.

“Take him outside,” Daniel said quietly.

“The paramedics are waiting.”

Noah clung to Ethan as they walked toward the ambulance.

Before entering, he looked back at Daniel.

“Are you Uncle Daniel?”

Daniel forced a gentle smile.

“Yes.”

For now, that was the only answer Noah could understand.

At the hospital, doctors found no major injuries.

Noah was dehydrated and exhausted.

He repeatedly asked why Grandma Margaret had sent him away.

Ethan had no answer.

Detective Ortiz did.

“Because she was afraid someone would discover the truth.”

Margaret was arrested before sunrise.

She was charged with child endangerment and obstruction while investigators prepared additional charges.

Calvin remained missing.

During questioning, Noah remembered hearing him make a phone call.

“He said Helen should have stayed quiet.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Helen is alive?”

Noah nodded.

“The man said she was at Saint Agnes.”

Detective Ortiz searched the name.

Saint Agnes was a private psychiatric care facility outside Milwaukee.

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

The facility belonged to a healthcare company owned through a Whitmore subsidiary.

Margaret controlled its board.

Daniel drove there with Detective Ortiz that afternoon.

The administrator initially denied that anyone named Helen had ever been admitted.

Daniel placed the hospital bracelet and Claire’s photograph on his desk.

“I own the company that owns this building.”

“You can show us the records voluntarily, or Detective Ortiz can return with a warrant and a forensic accounting team.”

The administrator’s confidence disappeared.

Helen Ward had been admitted eighteen months earlier.

Her records claimed she suffered from severe delusions and posed a danger to herself.

There had been no court hearing.

No family authorization.

No legitimate medical referral.

Margaret had signed every payment approval.

A nurse led Daniel to a locked room at the end of the hall.

A thin blond woman sat beside the window.

Her hair had turned almost completely gray.

A silver chain hung around her neck.

The medallion was missing.

Daniel stepped into the room.

“Helen?”

The woman slowly turned.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You finally found them.”

Daniel could barely breathe.

“I found Ivy and Skye.”

Helen closed her eyes in relief.

Then Daniel asked the question that had haunted him since opening Claire’s box.

“Why did you leave them at the house?”

Helen looked confused.

May you like

“I did not.”

“Someone took them from me three months ago.”
