Chapter 14 - CLAIRE’S FINAL LETTER

Daniel waited until the children were asleep before opening Claire’s letter.
Helen sat beside him at the kitchen table.
The paper carried Claire’s faint perfume.
Daniel unfolded it carefully.
“My dearest Daniel,” the letter began.
“I spent months trying to decide whether telling you the truth would save our children or place them in greater danger.”
Daniel paused as his vision blurred.
Helen gently touched his arm.
He continued reading.
“Your mother knew how deeply you wanted a family.”
“She also knew that children would give you the courage to stop living for her approval.”
“That is why she feared them.”
Claire explained that the surrogacy had been Daniel’s anniversary surprise.
She had planned to reveal the pregnancy after the first healthy scan.
But Margaret discovered the clinic records first.
She bribed a doctor to claim the embryos had failed.
Helen later contacted Claire and revealed that the babies were alive.
Together, they tried to protect them while collecting evidence.
“I wanted to place Ivy, Skye, and Noah in your arms,” Claire wrote.
“I wanted to watch you become the father I knew you could be.”
“But when Noah was taken, I realized Margaret had people watching us.”
“By then, my body was already failing.”
Daniel covered his mouth to silence a sob.
The final paragraph was written in shakier handwriting.
“Please do not waste your life asking why I did not trust you sooner.”
“I trusted your heart.”
“I simply underestimated how thoroughly Margaret had built walls around it.”
“Tear them down.”
“Let our children fill this house with noise.”
“And when they ask about me, tell them I loved them before I ever saw their faces.”
Daniel pressed the letter against his chest.
For nearly two years, the lake house had represented everything he had lost.
Now three small pairs of shoes sat beside the front door.
Toys covered the living-room rug.
Crayon drawings hung crookedly across the refrigerator.
The silence Claire had hated was finally gone.
The next morning, Daniel gathered Ivy, Skye, and Noah beneath Claire’s photograph.
He told them about the woman who had dreamed of them.
Ivy listened with wide eyes.
Skye held Claire’s silver medallion.
Noah studied the photograph for a long time.
“Was she my mommy too?”
Daniel nodded.
“She was.”
Noah leaned against him.
“Can I call you Daddy someday?”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“You can call me whatever makes you feel safe.”
Noah thought about it.
Then he whispered the word for the first time.
“Daddy.”
Daniel closed his eyes and held all three children close.
But their peace was interrupted by a call from Detective Ortiz.
“Daniel, we found something in Margaret’s private vault.”

“There is another birth certificate.”
“And it has Claire’s name on it.”
