Chapter 10 - CLAIRE’S SECOND RECORDING

Daniel watched Lauren’s video twice.

“She is lying.”

Detective Ortiz paused the screen.

“Perhaps.”

“But if she releases a manipulated recording, public pressure could affect the custody investigation.”

Ethan sat heavily at the kitchen table.

“Lauren has been planning this for years.”

Daniel looked at him.

“She could not have planned it without your silence.”

Ethan flinched.

Noah stood in the doorway with Rosa.

He had heard enough to understand that something was wrong.

“Is Mommy Lauren bad?”

Ethan knelt before him.

“She made some very bad choices.”

Noah began to cry.

“Is she coming back?”

Ethan could not answer.

Daniel watched his son’s heartbreak and understood that exposing the truth would not erase the love Noah felt for the people who raised him.

Every adult betrayal had created a wound the children would carry.

Helen was released from Saint Agnes under emergency medical supervision.

When Ivy and Skye saw her, they ran across the room.

“Mommy!”

Helen dropped to her knees and embraced them.

Daniel turned away to give them privacy.

Skye reached back and grabbed his hand.

“Daddy stays.”

Helen looked at Daniel through her tears.

“They recognized you from Claire’s pictures.”

Daniel crouched beside them.

For the first time, all three of them sat together.

Later, Helen explained that Claire had secretly visited the children throughout her illness.

She had planned to tell Daniel after gathering proof against Margaret.

But Claire’s health declined faster than anyone expected.

“She was afraid your mother would destroy the evidence and take the children again,” Helen said.

“So she asked me to stay hidden.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“She should have trusted me.”

Helen looked at him gently.

“She wanted to.”

“But Margaret controlled your schedule, your doctors, your household staff, and even the messages Claire tried to send.”

Daniel remembered months of business trips arranged by his mother.

He remembered calls Claire claimed had never reached her.

He remembered Margaret repeatedly insisting that Claire needed rest and isolation.

He had accepted every explanation.

That realization hurt almost as much as the betrayal itself.

A forensic specialist examined Lauren’s recording.

Claire’s voice was real.

But the sentences had been cut and rearranged.

The original file was hidden in the audio metadata.

Daniel listened as Claire spoke.

“Daniel knows nothing about the children.”

“Margaret made certain of that.”

“If anything happens to me, he must never blame himself.”

Daniel covered his face.

Then Claire said something no one expected.

“Ethan helped Margaret take Noah.”

Every person in the room turned toward Ethan.
