Chapter 6 - NOAH DISAPPEARS

The nanny’s name was Rosa Alvarez.

She had driven from Ethan’s house after finding Noah’s bedroom empty.

“The back door was open,” Rosa said.

“His coat and shoes were gone.”

Ethan grabbed her shoulders.

“How could you let him disappear?”

Rosa pulled away from him.

“Your mother came to the house this afternoon.”

Everyone turned toward Margaret.

Margaret’s expression did not change.

Rosa continued.

“She packed a blue bag and told Noah they were going on a trip.”

Daniel looked at the clock.

“But Margaret has been here for more than an hour.”

Rosa nodded.

“She left Noah with a driver before coming here.”

Ethan stared at his mother.

“Where did you send him?”

Margaret remained silent.

Daniel stepped close enough that she could see the fury in his eyes.

“You will tell me where my son is.”

“He is safe.”

“Safe where?”

“Far away from this chaos.”

Daniel grabbed his phone.

“I am calling the police.”

Margaret finally raised her voice.

“And what will you tell them?”

“That you discovered three children whose birth was hidden through an illegal surrogacy arrangement?”

“That your dead wife paid a desperate woman to carry them?”

“That your brother has raised one of them since infancy?”

Daniel did not hesitate.

“I will tell them everything.”

“Including what I did not know.”

“Including what Claire did.”

“Including what you did.”

Margaret looked shaken by his answer.

She had expected him to protect the Whitmore name.

Daniel no longer cared about the name.

He cared about three children who had paid for that name with their childhoods.

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Detective Lena Ortiz took the statements.

She examined the fake CPS badge recovered from the driveway camera footage.

Then she inspected Claire’s recorder and the hospital documents.

“This is no longer an abandonment case,” she said.

“This may involve kidnapping, fraud, forged medical records, and conspiracy.”

Margaret spoke coldly.

“You cannot prove anything.”

Detective Ortiz looked at her.

“That sounded less like a denial and more like a challenge.”

The detective requested Margaret’s phone.

Margaret refused.

A judge issued an emergency warrant before midnight.

The phone revealed multiple calls to a private driver named Calvin Reece.

Daniel recognized the name.

Calvin had worked for the Whitmore family for twenty-two years.

The police traced his vehicle toward the Wisconsin state line.

Then the signal disappeared.

At 2:17 in the morning, Daniel’s phone rang.

A small voice whispered through the speaker.

“Uncle Daniel?”

It was Noah.

Daniel’s knees nearly gave way.

“Noah, where are you?”

“The man left me in a house.”

“There are no lights.”

Daniel fought to keep his voice steady.

“Can you see anything outside?”

Noah began to cry.

“Only trees.”

May you like

Then someone opened a door near him.

The line went dead.
