Chapter 13 - MARGARET’S LAST DEFENSE

Lauren dropped the recordings.
Police arrested her before she reached the door.
Calvin surrendered in the ballroom.
Brenda attempted to escape through the loading dock but was caught outside.
Charles Voss immediately offered to cooperate.
He claimed Margaret had paid him to create false adoption documents and silence the fertility clinic.
Forensic accountants uncovered a network of hidden payments stretching back four years.
Clinic employees had been bribed.
Birth certificates had been altered.
Hospital files had been deleted.
Helen had been declared mentally unstable without evaluation.
Claire’s letters to Daniel had been intercepted by Margaret’s staff.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Yet Margaret still refused to accept responsibility.
During her first court hearing, she looked directly at Daniel.
“Everything I did was for you.”
Daniel sat behind the prosecutor.
“No.”
“Everything you did was to control me.”
Margaret’s attorney requested bail.
The prosecutor opposed it, citing her attempt to move Noah under a false identity.
The judge denied bail.
Margaret’s calm expression finally broke.
“Daniel, tell them I would never hurt those children.”
Daniel remembered Ivy’s wounded feet.
He remembered Skye shivering outside the lake house.
He remembered Noah trapped alone in a storage shed.
“You hurt them every day you kept them from their family.”
Margaret was led away in handcuffs.
Ethan later accepted a plea agreement requiring a full confession, probation, and supervised contact with Noah only if approved by a family court.
Lauren faced more serious charges for kidnapping, unlawful confinement, extortion, and evidence tampering.
Daniel expected relief.
Instead, he felt exhausted.
The legal truth had been uncovered.
But the children still needed a home.
Helen loved Ivy and Skye deeply.
Noah loved Ethan and Rosa.
Daniel was their biological father, but he was still a stranger to all three.
A child psychologist named Dr. Emily Carter advised against sudden separation.
“The goal is not to decide which adult deserves them,” she said.
“The goal is to create stability around the children.”
Daniel agreed to a gradual reunification plan.
Helen moved into the guest cottage beside the lake house.
Rosa remained Noah’s caregiver during the transition.
Ethan was allowed one supervised visit each week.
During the first visit, Noah ran into Ethan’s arms.
Daniel watched from across the room.
Jealousy cut through him.
Then Noah turned and reached for Daniel too.
“Uncle Daniel can sit with us.”
Daniel sat beside them.
He did not correct the name.
Trust could not be demanded.
It had to be earned.
That night, Skye found another envelope hidden beneath Claire’s photograph.

On the front, Claire had written one sentence.
“For Daniel, when the children finally come home.”
