Chapter 9 - THE QUESTION HE IGNORED

Graham sent Maya the old message and asked if she would explain it to the investigator.
He did not ask her to make him feel better about ignoring it.
With Denise beside her, Maya described envelopes of cash she had been instructed to sign for.
They were listed as household reimbursements.
Groceries.
Children's supplies.
Emergency purchases.
“How much did you receive?” the detective asked.
“Usually a hundred or two hundred dollars.”
The scanned vouchers in Graham's files showed larger amounts.
Eight hundred.
Twelve hundred.
Once, eighteen hundred.
Maya stared at the page.
“That isn't what I signed.”
Her signature was real.
The amounts above it were not the amounts she remembered.
“Did you keep records?”
“I photographed my receipts before I gave them to Mrs. Hall.
So nobody could say I lost one.”
She opened a folder on her phone.
Milk.
School glue.
A replacement winter coat for Luke after a growth spurt.
Ordinary purchases, photographed on the kitchen counter.
Beside several receipts were the original small cash slips, their totals visible.
Denise leaned forward.
Maya had not gathered evidence against anyone.
She had gathered protection against being blamed.
Graham hired an accountant to review the household account and provided the results to the investigator.
Over fourteen months, the reimbursement entries had grown while the family's actual expenses had barely changed.
The discrepancy was more than thirty thousand dollars.
Claire had controlled the account.
Graham had approved the monthly summaries without opening the attachments.
When he confronted her, she didn't deny the number.
“You spend that much on a business dinner without blinking.”
“Then why change Maya's receipts?”
“Because you question every dollar I spend on myself.”
“You could have argued with me.
You could have left me.
You put her name on it.”
Claire's voice dropped.
“She shouldn't have gone through my papers.”
There it was.
Not a confession to every act.
But a glimpse of the rule she had lived by: the worst offense was noticing.
That evening, Graham called the insurance company to ask whether Claire had reported the missing jewelry to them as well.
She had.
The claim included the necklace, the ring, and the bracelet.
Attached was a signed statement naming Maya as the suspected thief.
