Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN HANDCUFFS

“Don't take Maya! Please—she didn't do anything!”
Graham Hall opened his front door and found his six-year-old sons trying to stop an arrest.
Two officers stood in the marble foyer.
Maya was between them, her wrists cuffed in front of her blue uniform.
Owen held her apron with both fists.
His twin brother, Luke, had buried his wet face against her hip.
“Mr. Hall.”
Her voice cracked.
“I didn't do this.”
Behind Graham, Claire stood on the porch, arms folded across her cream sweater.
“She stole from this family.”
Graham looked from his wife to the woman who had spent three years finding lost sneakers, washing dinner plates, and sitting beside the boys when thunderstorms shook the windows.
“What was stolen?”
“My mother's jewelry,” Claire said.
“The bracelet was in her bag.”
Officer Ellis held a clear evidence pouch.
Inside lay a diamond bracelet Graham recognized from family photographs.
“We're still establishing what happened,” Ellis said.
“Your wife reported several missing pieces and showed us where she'd found this one.”
“I never put that in my bag,” Maya said.
Claire let out a tired breath.
“Of course you didn't.”
The second officer, Reed, gently pulled Owen's fingers from Maya's apron.
The boy staggered back, suddenly alone on the cold floor.
His little fists stayed clenched.
“Dad.”
Something in that one word brought Graham to his knees.
“What is it?”
Owen looked toward the porch.
Claire unfolded her arms.
“Sweetheart, you're upset.”
Graham kept his eyes on his son.
“You can tell me.”
The boy's lip shook.
“Maya didn't hide the jewelry.”
Claire stepped over the threshold.
“Owen.”
“Mom did.”
Nobody moved.
Even Luke lifted his head.
Claire gave a small, sharp laugh.
“He doesn't understand.”
“I saw her,” Owen whispered.
Ellis lowered the evidence pouch.
“Tell me what you saw.”
Claire reached for Owen, but he stepped behind Graham's shoulder.
“The bracelet went in Maya's bag.”
He swallowed hard.
“The shiny necklace went in the blue suitcase.”
Graham stood slowly.
“What blue suitcase?”
“The one Mom said we weren't allowed to touch.”
Claire's eyes moved toward the stairs.
Only for a second.
Graham saw it.
So did Ellis.
“Where is that suitcase?” the officer asked.
Owen pointed upstairs.
May you like
“In Mom's closet.”
Claire moved before anyone else did.
