Chapter 8 - THE NOTE UNDER THE PILLOW

Graham sat on the floor outside his sons' bedroom until Owen came out for water.
“Can we talk?”
The boy saw the note in his hand and froze.
“I'm not mad.”
Owen leaned against the wall.
“I was going to give it to Mom.”
“What do you think will happen if you don't?”
His son stared at the carpet.
“She said families stay together when people keep family things inside.”
Graham put the note down.
“Listen to me.
What happens between Mom and me is our responsibility.
You don't have to fix it.”
“Then why is she mad at me?”
The question broke through every careful sentence he had prepared.
“Because she made a choice, and you told someone about it.
Her being mad doesn't make your choice wrong.”
Owen began to cry.
Graham held him without asking him to stop.
The next morning, he arranged counseling for both boys.
He also told Claire that, until they had a plan agreed through their attorneys, he would handle school pickup and stay home with them.
She laughed.
“You'll last two days.”
On the first day, he burned grilled cheese.
On the second, he forgot that Luke hated the seam inside his gray socks.
On the third, he found a second pair in the laundry and understood why Maya had always kept extras downstairs.
None of those discoveries made him a hero.
They made him late.
Meanwhile, Claire sent a written account to the detective.
She claimed Maya had coached Owen because she feared being fired.
She attached an old message from Maya:
I'll talk to Owen before you get home.
Graham recognized the date.
He searched the complete exchange in the household message group.
Owen had broken a classroom window with a ball.
Maya had offered to talk with him about telling his parents.
He forwarded the whole conversation, not just the sentence Claire had selected.
Then he scrolled farther.
A message he had never answered sat beneath a photo of a school permission slip.
Mr. Hall, could we set aside ten minutes?
There's something about the household accounts I don't understand, and Mrs. Hall says to leave it alone.
The date was three weeks earlier.
