Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Claire found Graham at the breakfast table with the boys' school forms.

“I'm taking them to my mother's for a few days.”

He put down his pen.

“Have you told them?”

“They're my children.”

“They're frightened.

We're not making another sudden change without talking.”

Her chair scraped the floor.

“You mean without your permission.”

“I mean without using them to win this argument.”

Luke appeared in the doorway with his backpack.

Claire smiled immediately.

“Pancakes, sweetheart?”

He looked at the empty stove.

Then at his father.

After school drop-off, Graham met a family attorney.

He described the arrest, Owen's account, and the threats the boy reported.

He asked what he could do to keep the children's routine stable while the adults dealt with the investigation.

For once, he stayed until every question had an answer he understood.

Maya spent that same morning retrieving belongings with Rosa and an arranged police standby.

Claire had already filled three cardboard boxes.

“My books aren't in here,” Maya said.

“They're in the apartment.”

“Then I'll pack them myself.”

Claire blocked the garage stairs until the officer stepped closer.

Then she moved.

Inside, Maya found her sewing machine on the floor and an empty garbage bag spread across her bed.

She folded it without a word.

Rosa packed the textbooks.

As they carried the final box down, Claire approached Maya beside the car.

“This doesn't have to get ugly.”

Maya looked at the house.

“It already did.”

“I can give you twenty thousand dollars.

A good reference.

Enough to start over.”

“For what?”

“Tell them Owen misunderstood.

You were upset.

You can't be sure where the bracelet came from.”

“I am sure I didn't put it there.”

Claire's smile disappeared.

“You think Graham will keep defending you when he understands what this will cost him?”

Maya set the box in Rosa's trunk.

“I'm not asking him to defend me.

I'm telling the truth.”

Rosa stood beside her.

“We both heard what you just offered.”

Claire glanced toward the officer, who was waiting by the garage.

Then she walked away.

That night, Maya wrote down the conversation for Denise while every word was fresh.

Halfway through, her phone lit up.

It was a photograph of a handwritten note, sent by Graham.

He had found it beneath Owen's pillow.

I'm sorry I told.

Please don't send Luke away.
