Chapter 11 - THE CAR IN THE DRIVEWAY

“Owen, you did nothing wrong,” Maya said.

The call ended.

She immediately called Graham and repeated the conversation exactly.

No guessing.

No softening.

He was already driving toward the school.

He pulled over to call the office.

Claire had collected the boys twelve minutes earlier.

There was no court order limiting her access, and both parents were on the pickup list.

Graham called her.

No answer.

He called again.

Then she texted.

We're home getting their things.

Stop making this dramatic.

He reached the house as she rolled the blue suitcase across the front step.

Luke sat in the back of her car, crying against the window.

Owen stared straight ahead.

Graham parked without blocking the driveway.

He opened the rear door.

“Hey, guys.”

Luke threw himself toward him.

“Do you still want us?”

Graham closed his eyes for one second.

Then he held his son.

“Every day.

Every single day.”

Claire stood beside the suitcase.

“We were going to my mother's.”

“Then why do they think I don't want them?”

“They misunderstood.”

Owen began shaking his head.

He wasn't looking at either parent.

He was looking at his own knees.

Graham crouched beside the car.

“You don't have to explain anything right now.”

Claire reached for Luke.

He held tighter to his father's shirt.

The rejection changed her face.

“Look what you've done to them.”

Graham's voice stayed low.

“They're not getting in the middle of this again.

Let's call our attorneys and make a plan.”

After a long, bitter conversation, Claire agreed to leave alone for the evening while they worked out temporary arrangements.

Graham brought the boys inside.

He did not let them watch her pack the car.

At bedtime, Owen confessed he had borrowed Claire's unlocked phone while she loaded their bags.

He remembered Maya's number because she had taught both boys to memorize an emergency contact.

“Am I in trouble for using it?”

“You called someone because you were scared.

I'm glad you did.”

Downstairs, Graham found a message from Maya.

Please tell them I heard them.

Please don't tell them I can fix everything.

He read it twice.

Then answered.

I will.

And I won't.

The next morning, Claire's attorney sent a proposal.

She would agree to the boys staying in the house with Graham for now.

In exchange, she wanted him to retract his statements about the jewelry.
