Chapter 2 - THE NANNY WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The ambulance arrived twelve minutes later.

Twelve minutes that felt like twelve hours.

Doctors rushed into the nursery while Alessio stood frozen near the wall.

He didn’t leave.

Not once.

He watched every movement.

Every question.

Every breath Leo took.

When the pediatric doctor finally examined the baby, he looked serious.

“He’s lucky.”

Those two words changed the room.

Lucky.

Because five seconds later, there would have been no saving him.

Alessio closed his eyes.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

The guilt.

The fear.

The pain.

A man like Alessio Romano didn’t show weakness.

Not in front of enemies.

Not in front of employees.

Not in front of anyone.

But his son was different.

“Can he be transported?” the doctor asked.

Alessio immediately answered.

“No hospital.”

The doctor looked confused.

I stepped forward.

“He needs proper monitoring.”

Alessio looked at me.

“You don’t decide what happens in my house.”

I stared back.

“And you almost lost your son because everyone in this house thought nothing bad could happen.”

The doctor became uncomfortable.

Nobody talked to Alessio like that.

Nobody.

But I didn’t care.

Because I had held Leo while he stopped breathing.

And I knew something worse was coming.

Alessio stepped closer.

“You’re brave.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I’m angry.”

That surprised him.

“You hired me to protect your child.”

His expression hardened.

“And I did.”

“You saved him.”

“No.”

I looked at the blue bead.

“Someone else almost killed him.”

Before he could answer, a voice came from the hallway.

“Boss?”

A tall man entered.

Dominic.

Alessio’s right-hand man.

Everyone in Chicago knew Dominic was the person who handled the problems Alessio couldn’t solve publicly.

“Security checked the cameras.”

Alessio turned.

“And?”

Dominic hesitated.

That hesitation told me something was wrong.

“Someone deleted the footage.”

The entire room went silent.

Alessio’s face changed.

“Who has access?”

“Only five people.”

“Names.”

Dominic looked uncomfortable.

“The house manager. Two security officers. The chef.”

He paused.

“And the nanny.”

Everyone looked at me.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Alessio’s eyes became cold again.

The father disappeared.

The mafia boss returned.

“You.”

My stomach dropped.

“You think I hurt Leo?”

“I think everyone is a possibility.”

I nodded slowly.

“Then check everything.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Why aren’t you angry?”

“Because I know the truth.”

“What truth?”

I pointed at the camera.

“The person who framed me wanted you to suspect me.”

A long silence followed.

Then Dominic received a message.

He looked at his phone.

His face went pale.

“Boss…”

Alessio grabbed the phone.

The message contained one sentence.

YOU SAVED THE WRONG CHILD.

And attached beneath it…

was a photo of Leo sleeping.

Taken inside the nursery.
