Chapter 1 - The Secret Beneath The Sofa
The room remained silent after the stranger was discovered.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The only sound was the little girl’s frightened breathing.
Her father, Daniel Carter, stared at the man hiding beneath the sofa.
A man who had no reason to be there.
A man who had somehow been living inside his home.
Daniel slowly stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
The stranger said nothing.
His eyes moved toward Daniel’s wife, Melissa.
That small movement was enough.
Daniel noticed.
Melissa noticed that he noticed.
And the little girl, Emma, felt the tension between them.
“Mommy knows him,” Emma whispered.
Melissa immediately turned around.
“Emma, stop lying.”
The little girl stepped back.
Her eyes filled with fear.
But Daniel knew his daughter.
She had never spoken like that before.
He looked at his wife.
“Explain.”
Melissa opened her mouth.
But no words came out.
Then the stranger suddenly smiled.
A cold, confident smile.
And Daniel realized something terrifying.
This man was not afraid of being caught.
