Chapter 6 - THE FIRE

Flames were already spreading through Charles Whitmore's study.
Daniel ran toward it.
Thomas grabbed him.
“Don't!”
“The files!”
“They're gone!”
Daniel stared through the doorway.
The desk was burning.
The curtains were burning.
His mother's portrait was already blackening around the edges.
Someone had started the fire deliberately.
Daniel reached into his pocket.
The second flash drive was still there.
Whoever had done this didn't know he had made a copy.
“Where's Vanessa?”
Thomas looked toward the library.
The doors stood open.
The room was empty.
Daniel's stomach dropped.
“Elena.”
He ran.
The guest room door was open.
The bed was empty.
“Elena!”
No answer.
Daniel raced toward the rear entrance.
A black SUV was disappearing through the estate gates.
Daniel grabbed his phone.
He called security.
“Close the gates!”
“Sir, the system isn't responding.”
Daniel looked toward the security cameras.
Every light had gone dark.

Vanessa hadn't escaped alone.
She had taken Elena with her.
