Chapter 4 - THE SECOND TRAITOR

Daniel rushed into the hallway.
A shadow disappeared around the corner.
He followed.
“Stop!”
Footsteps raced toward the servants' corridor.
Daniel rounded the corner.
A man crashed into him.
They both stumbled.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
It was Thomas Blake.
The estate manager.
Thomas had worked for the Whitmore family for eighteen years.
“Mr. Whitmore!”
“What were you doing outside my father's study?”
Thomas looked terrified.
“I can explain.”
“Start.”
Thomas glanced toward the staircase.
Then whispered,
“Not here.”
Daniel didn't release him.
“Why?”
“Because the house has cameras.”
“I installed those cameras.”
“No.”
Thomas looked directly at him.
“Mr. Caldwell did.”
Daniel loosened his grip.
“Vanessa's father?”
Thomas nodded.
“Three months ago.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I tried.”
Daniel nearly laughed.
Everyone had apparently tried to tell him something.
Thomas reached into his pocket.
He produced a tiny memory card.
“I copied part of the system.”
“What’s on it?”
“Enough to prove Miss Caldwell has been watching Elena.”
Daniel's face hardened.
“How long?”
“Months.”
Thomas looked ashamed.
“She ordered me to report where Elena went, who she spoke to, everything.”
“And you did?”
“At first.”
Daniel's eyes turned cold.
Thomas continued quickly.
“Then I realized why.”
“Why?”
“She wasn't worried Elena would steal.”
Thomas swallowed.
“She was worried Elena would remember.”
Daniel frowned.
“Remember what?”
“The night your father died.”
Daniel felt the hallway tilt beneath him.
“Elena was here?”
Thomas nodded.
“She was the last person besides Marcus to see him alive.”
Daniel turned toward the guest room.
Suddenly Elena's connection to his father made sense.

But another question replaced it.
Why hadn't Elena told him?
