Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE GONE

“You said she lost the baby.”

The words seemed to freeze the entire mansion.

Vanessa Caldwell stood beneath the crystal chandelier, her face drained of color.

For once, she had no answer.

Across the marble floor, Elena Morales remained on her knees.

One arm wrapped around her swollen belly.

The other pressed against the floor as she struggled to steady herself.

Daniel Whitmore looked at her.

Seven months pregnant.

Alive.

Terrified.

And standing inside his own home.

Nothing made sense.

“Elena?”

Her name came out like a question.

Elena slowly lifted her head.

The moment she saw him, fresh tears filled her eyes.

“Daniel…”

Vanessa immediately stepped between them.

“She’s manipulating you.”

Daniel didn't even look at her.

He crossed the foyer and crouched beside Elena.

“Are you hurt?”

Elena tried to answer.

Instead, a sharp pain crossed her face.

Her hand tightened over her belly.

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

“Call a doctor.”

Vanessa scoffed.

“She’s being dramatic.”

Daniel slowly turned his head.

“What did you say?”

Something in his voice made Vanessa step backward.

Daniel looked at the shattered porcelain.

Then the food covering Elena's uniform.

Then Vanessa.

“Did you throw that plate at her?”

“She ruined my lunch.”

Daniel stared at her.

Vanessa realized too late what she had admitted.

“It wasn't supposed to hit her.”

Daniel stood.

“Get away from her.”

“Daniel—”

“Now.”

Vanessa backed away.

Daniel removed his suit jacket and gently placed it around Elena's shoulders.

She flinched when he touched her.

That small reaction hurt him more than he expected.

“Elena.”

His voice softened.

“Why are you here?”

Elena looked toward Vanessa.

Fear immediately returned to her face.

Daniel noticed.

“What did she do to you?”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don't listen to her.”

Daniel raised one hand.

“Not another word.”

For the first time since he entered the mansion, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

Elena swallowed.

“I didn't come here because I wanted to.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Elena's lips trembled.

“I never left you.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“Elena.”

It sounded like a warning.

Elena looked directly at her.

Something changed.

Months of fear seemed to collide with months of humiliation.

“No.”

Elena's voice was still quiet.

But it was no longer weak.

“You don't get to silence me anymore.”

Daniel stared between them.

“Elena, tell me what happened.”

She looked at him.

“I tried.”

His brow furrowed.

“What?”

“I tried to tell you.”

“When?”

“Every day.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I never received anything.”

“I know.”

Elena's gaze moved toward Vanessa.

“Because she made sure you wouldn't.”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“This is insane.”

Elena ignored her.

“She took my phone.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“She canceled my email account.”

Elena continued.

“She told the staff I had stolen from you.”

Daniel glanced toward the housekeeper standing silently near the hallway.

The older woman lowered her eyes.

“And then,” Elena whispered, “she told me you never wanted to see me again.”

Daniel's anger disappeared for one second.

Something worse replaced it.

Pain.

“I never said that.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I know that now.”

Vanessa rushed forward.

“She is lying!”

Daniel turned.

“Then explain the baby.”

Silence.

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You told me Elena miscarried.”

Vanessa backed away.

“You were overseas.”

“You showed me hospital paperwork.”

“I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward Elena.

“From her.”

Daniel stared at her.

Then Elena said the sentence that changed everything.

“She wasn't protecting you from me.”

Daniel turned.

Elena's hand remained over her stomach.

“She was protecting herself from what your father left behind.”

Daniel went completely still.

“My father?”

Elena nodded.

Vanessa whispered,

“Don't.”

Daniel heard her.

And suddenly he understood that the pregnancy wasn't the only secret in the room.

“What did my father leave behind?”

Elena looked toward the grand staircase.

May you like

“Something hidden inside this house.”

And Vanessa's face told Daniel that Elena was telling the truth.
