Chapter 6 - RETURN TO JOE’S DINER

The rain had stopped.

But the city still looked like it was drowning.

Sam drove through empty streets with both hands gripping the steering wheel.

Nobody spoke.

The silence between him and Maya was heavier than any conversation.

Finally, Maya broke it.

“You’re scared.”

Sam kept looking ahead.

“I’m angry.”

“That’s not what I said.”

He glanced at her.

“You always analyze people like that?”

“It’s my job.”

“Was.”

Maya looked down.

“Yeah.”

For a moment, they both understood each other.

Two people who had lost everything because they discovered something they were never supposed to see.

Joe’s Diner appeared at the end of the street.

The neon sign still flickered.

The same broken letters.

The same buzzing sound.

The same place where Sam’s entire life had started falling apart.

He parked across the street.

Maya looked at the building.

“You really don’t remember anything?”

Sam shook his head.

“I remember drinking coffee.”

“That’s it?”

“No.”

He stared at the window.

“I remember Lena smiling.”

His voice became quieter.

“I remember her saying she had something important to tell me.”

“What?”

Sam closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.”

They entered through the back door.

The diner was empty.

The chairs were still upside down on tables.

The smell of old coffee remained in the air.

Sam walked toward the booth where Maya had sat hours earlier.

His booth.

The one where Lena used to sit.

Maya noticed something.

“Sam.”

He turned.

She pointed at the table.

A small scratch was carved into the wooden edge.

Two letters.

S.L.

Sam touched it.

His hand started shaking.

“Lena did this.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she always said…”

He paused.

“She said if something happened, she would leave me a message somewhere I would never forget.”

Maya searched the booth.

Underneath the table, she found a small metal compartment.

Inside was an old coffee mug.

A simple white mug.

Nothing special.

But Sam froze.

“That’s impossible.”

“What?”

“That mug disappeared six years ago.”

Maya picked it up.

There was a symbol at the bottom.

The same black circle with a silver line.

She looked at Sam.

“The memory key.”

Sam reached for it.

The moment his fingers touched the mug…

Everything changed.

A memory exploded inside his mind.

A laboratory.

Lena standing in front of him.

She looked terrified.

“Sam, listen to me.”

“You can’t trust Daniel.”

Sam heard his own voice.

“Daniel is my partner.”

Lena shook her head.

“He’s the one who sold us out.”

A loud alarm sounded.

Footsteps approached.

Lena pushed the mug into his hand.

“Take this.”

“What is it?”

“The only thing they can’t erase.”

The memory shifted.

Daniel entered the room.

Sam saw his own face.

Confusion.

Fear.

Betrayal.

Then Daniel said:

“I’m sorry, Sam.”

The memory ended.

Sam fell against the table.

Maya grabbed him.

“What did you see?”

Sam looked up.

His eyes were filled with rage.

“Daniel.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“What did he do?”

Sam looked at the mug.

“He didn’t just betray us.”

He clenched his fist.

“He erased me.”

Suddenly, the diner lights turned on.

Every screen behind the counter activated.

A video appeared.

Daniel Cross looked directly at them.

“Congratulations, Sam.”

He smiled.

May you like

“You finally remembered.”
