Chapter 14 - THE WORLD THAT REMEMBERED

Three months later.
The world changed.
Vortex Dynamics collapsed within weeks.
Government investigations began.
Thousands of hidden files became public.
People learned the truth.
They learned about Helix.
They learned about the experiments.
They learned about the people who disappeared.
Sam sat inside Joe’s Diner.
The same booth.
The same table.
A fresh cup of black coffee sat in front of him.
Maya walked in.
This time, she wasn’t running.
No raincoat.
No fear.
Just Maya.
She sat across from him.
“You’re becoming predictable.”
Sam looked up.
“How?”
“You always come here at 5:00 AM.”
Sam looked at the clock.
5:00.
He smiled.
“Some habits survive everything.”
Maya looked at the empty seat beside him.
“Do you still see her?”
Sam knew who she meant.
“Sometimes.”
“Does it hurt?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“But not like before.”
Maya nodded.
“That’s good.”
Sam looked at her.
“What about you?”
“What about me?”
“Do you remember everything?”
Maya looked outside.
“Not everything.”
She smiled slightly.
“Maybe that’s okay.”
Sam agreed.
Some memories were meant to heal.
Not haunt.
The diner door opened.
An old man entered.
Sam immediately recognized him.
Dr. Adrian Vale.
Maya became tense.
“What is he doing here?”
Sam watched him carefully.
Vale walked toward the table.
“I came to apologize.”
Sam looked at him.
“Three months late.”
“Yes.”
Vale placed a small envelope on the table.
“What is this?”
“The last file.”
Sam opened it.
Inside was one photograph.
Lena.
Smiling.
Holding two coffee mugs.
On the back was a message.
For Sam.
If you are reading this, then you survived.
Sam closed his eyes.
Vale whispered:
“She believed you would.”
Sam looked at the photograph.
For the first time…
The memory didn’t feel like a wound.
May you like
It felt like a gift.
