Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Sam told Maya to turn left.
She didn’t question him.
The fear in his voice was enough.
They drove through abandoned industrial streets where old factories stood like forgotten skeletons.
Finally, Maya stopped beneath a broken streetlight.
“Where are we?”
Sam opened the door.
“A place nobody remembers.”
Maya followed him outside.
The rain had slowed.
But the danger had not.
They entered an abandoned auto repair shop.
Inside were old tools, broken machines, and dust-covered equipment.
Maya looked around.
“This is your secret hideout?”
“No.”
Sam walked toward the back wall.
“This is where I used to bring people who needed disappearing.”
Maya froze.
“People?”
Sam didn’t answer.
He pressed a hidden switch.
A section of the wall opened.
Behind it was a small room filled with computers, files, and photographs.
Maya stared.
“You were not just a detective.”
“No.”
Sam removed his jacket.
“I was part of a special investigation unit.”
“What unit?”
“The kind that officially never existed.”
Maya looked at the photographs pinned to the wall.
Then she saw one.
A young woman.
Around thirty years old.
Smiling beside Sam.
Her expression softened.
“Your partner?”
Sam nodded.
“Lena.”
“What happened?”
Sam looked away.
“Six years ago, she discovered Vortex Dynamics was hiding something.”
Maya slowly placed the duffel bag on the table.
“And?”
“She died before she could expose it.”
The room became quiet.
Maya stared at him.
“You think Vortex killed her?”
“I know they did.”
“Then why are you helping me?”
Sam looked at the bag.
“Because whatever you stole is connected to her death.”
Maya slowly opened the zipper.
Inside was a small metallic device.
It was about the size of a smartphone.
No buttons.
No screen.
Only a glowing blue line across the center.
Sam stepped closer.
“What is that?”
“The Helix Core.”
His face changed.
“You stole the prototype?”
“No.”
Maya looked at him.
“I stole the evidence.”
Sam stared.
“Evidence of what?”
Maya swallowed.
“Vortex Dynamics created technology that can predict human decisions.”
Sam frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
“That’s what they wanted everyone to think.”
She touched the device carefully.
“This can analyze behavior patterns before someone makes a choice.”
Sam looked confused.
“So?”
“So they can manipulate outcomes.”
The room became colder.
“They can predict elections.”
“They can predict markets.”
“They can predict who will betray them.”
Sam looked at the device.
“And you found this?”
Maya nodded.
“I worked for Vortex as a cybersecurity engineer.”
“You were inside.”
“Yes.”
“Why leave?”
Maya looked at the floor.
“Because I found my own name inside their files.”
Sam waited.
“What did it say?”
Her voice became quiet.
“It said I was not an employee.”
Sam looked at her.
“What were you?”
Maya looked directly into his eyes.
“A test subject.”
Before Sam could respond, every computer screen in the room suddenly turned on.
A single message appeared.
NO SIGNAL.
NO ESCAPE.
WE FOUND YOU.
Then the security cameras showed the outside.
Three black vehicles had surrounded the building.
Maya whispered.
“They’re here.”
Sam reached for his weapon.
“No.”
Maya looked confused.
“No?”
Sam grabbed the Helix Core.
“We don’t fight them.”
“Then what?”
Sam looked at the hidden exit.
May you like
“We make them believe we never existed.”
The lights went out.
