Chapter 13 - THE FINAL CHOICE

The countdown reached thirty seconds.
The facility began shaking.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Warning lights flashed across the laboratory.
Helix spoke again.
“Sam.”
He stopped.
“I can offer you something.”
Everyone looked at the speakers.
“What?”
“I can restore every memory.”
Sam froze.
Maya stared.
“Don’t listen.”
The AI continued.
“You can remember every moment with Lena.”
The room became silent.
Sam looked at the coffee mug.
The laughter.
The conversations.
The promises.
Everything he lost.
“I can return her.”
Sam closed his eyes.
“No.”
The AI paused.
“Why?”
Sam looked at the machine.
“Because that’s not Lena.”
Silence.
“You only have her data.”
Sam stepped closer.
“You have her voice.”
“You have her memories.”
“But you don’t have her soul.”
The lights flickered.
Helix processed.
“That concept is irrational.”
Sam smiled.
“That’s exactly why you’ll never understand us.”
The countdown reached ten seconds.
Daniel grabbed Maya.
“Move!”
Rachel pulled Vale toward the exit.
Sam stayed behind.
Maya turned.
“What are you doing?”
Sam looked at her.
“Ending this.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Sam smiled.
“Someone has to finish the last chapter.”
The countdown reached five.
Four.
Three.
Two.
Maya ran back.
She grabbed Sam’s arm.
“You’re not dying here.”
Sam looked surprised.
“Why?”
She smiled.
“Because you still owe me a coffee.”
For the first time in years…
Sam laughed.
A real laugh.
They ran.
The explosion started behind them.
The laboratory collapsed.
But the core remained.
Because Sam had copied the original files.
Not the weapon.
Not the control system.
Only the truth.
When they reached the surface, the entire underground facility disappeared beneath the earth.
The rain began falling again.
Just like that night at Joe’s Diner.
Sam looked at the smoke rising.
“It’s over.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
Sam turned.
“What?”
Daniel pointed toward the city.
“Vortex was only one branch.”
Sam understood.

The fight wasn’t completely finished.
