Chapter 5 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE LAST MUG

The apartment felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Sam stared at the document.

“This isn’t real.”

Rachel crossed her arms.

“It is.”

“I would remember.”

“You wouldn’t.”

Sam looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Vortex didn’t just create technology to predict people.”

She looked at the Helix Core.

“They created technology to change them.”

Maya stepped forward.

“You mean memory manipulation?”

Rachel nodded.

Sam laughed quietly.

But there was no humor.

“So that’s it?”

He looked around.

“My memories aren’t mine?”

“Some are.”

Rachel answered.

“Some were rewritten.”

Sam looked at Maya.

“Your prototype can do this?”

“No.”

Maya shook her head.

“Helix only predicted behavior.”

Rachel looked at Sam.

“The prototype was only the beginning.”

Sam felt sick.

“What was the real project?”

Rachel opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A laboratory.

And a chair in the center.

A chair Sam recognized.

His face turned pale.

“That chair…”

Rachel nodded.

“You sat there.”

Maya looked at him.

“You were a test subject too.”

Sam stepped back.

“No.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You don’t remember the night Lena died because they removed it.”

The room went silent.

Sam touched his head.

Suddenly, flashes appeared.

A laboratory.

Lena screaming.

Dr. Vale begging him.

A needle.

A bright light.

And Lena saying:

“Sam, if you forget me… remember the coffee.”

Sam dropped into the chair.

Maya caught him.

“What coffee?”

His eyes filled with fear.

“The last mug.”

“What?”

He looked at Maya.

“The last time I saw Lena.”

He whispered.

“It was 5:00 AM.”

Rain.

A diner.

Two cups of coffee.

And a promise.

Maya slowly understood.

“Joe’s Diner.”

Sam nodded.

“That wasn’t random.”

The place where they met tonight.

The place where everything started.

Rachel looked at them.

“Vortex knew you would return there.”

Sam stood.

“Why?”

Rachel opened the final page of the folder.

The page contained one sentence.

THE LAST MUG CONTAINS THE ORIGINAL MEMORY KEY.

Maya stared.

“The diner…”

Sam grabbed his jacket.

“Was never just a diner.”

Outside, thunder exploded.

And across the street…

The man in the dark trench coat watched the building.

He smiled.

Because he knew.

Sam Carter was finally remembering.

May you like

And this time…

He would remember everything.
