Chapter 11 - THE MAN EVERYONE THOUGHT WAS A HERO

The old warehouse smelled like dust and forgotten memories.

Claire stood in front of a table covered with documents.

Michael had brought her there because he didn’t trust anyone else.

Not the police.

Not the media.

Not even the people who claimed to be on her side.

On the table were hundreds of pages.

Financial records.

Private letters.

Encrypted files.

Everything Ethan Carter had hidden.

Claire opened the first document.

Her eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

“No.”

Michael watched her.

“What?”

She looked up.

“This account…”

She pointed.

“This money was transferred before Damian took control.”

Michael nodded.

“I know.”

Claire shook her head.

“Damian didn’t start this.”

“No.”

Michael’s voice was quiet.

“Someone else did.”

Claire continued reading.

Every page destroyed another piece of the story she believed.

Her father wasn’t just fighting Damian.

He was fighting an entire network.

People with money.

Power.

Influence.

People who could erase anyone.

Claire whispered:

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

Michael looked at her.

“Because you were the only thing he wanted to protect.”

She laughed sadly.

“He protected me by leaving me with nothing.”

Michael didn’t respond.

Because he knew she was right.

Claire turned another page.

Then froze.

There was a letter.

Her name was written on it.

For Claire. When you are old enough to understand.

Her hands trembled.

She opened it.

Her father’s handwriting appeared.

My little Claire,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from the darkness surrounding our family.

Claire swallowed hard.

I need you to know one thing.

I never abandoned you.

Tears formed in her eyes.

I hid you because people I trusted became people I feared.

She continued reading.

Damian Whitmore is dangerous, but he is not the only person you need to watch.

Claire looked at Michael.

“What else?”

Michael looked away.

The letter continued.

The person closest to me betrayed me.

Claire stopped.

Her breathing became shallow.

The person I loved more than anyone gave Damian information that almost destroyed everything.

Her hands shook.

She already knew.

Her mother.

But then she read the next sentence.

However, I believe she did it because someone forced her.

Claire froze.

She read it again.

Your mother is not the person you should fear.

Her eyes widened.

The letter continued.

The person controlling everything is someone you never suspected.

The page ended.

There was another line underneath.

A name.

Claire stared.

“No…”

Michael looked at her.

“What?”

She slowly turned the paper around.

The name was written clearly.

Robert Carter.

Her uncle.

Her father’s own brother.

Claire felt sick.

“He was behind everything?”

Michael nodded.

“Your father discovered it too late.”

“But Damian…”

“Was his partner.”

Claire closed her eyes.

All this time, she thought Damian was the monster.

But he was only one piece.

A much bigger machine.

Then suddenly, the warehouse lights went out.

Michael immediately reached for his weapon.

“Someone’s here.”

Claire heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Coming closer.

A voice echoed through the darkness.

“You always were too curious, Claire.”

Her blood froze.

Because she recognized the voice.

Robert Carter.

Her uncle.

The man her father trusted.

The man who betrayed him.

The lights turned back on.

Robert stood at the entrance.

Smiling.

“Your father had one weakness.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

“He believed family meant loyalty.”

Robert walked closer.

“He was wrong.”

Michael stepped in front of Claire.

Robert smiled.

“You still don’t understand.”

He looked at Claire.

“Your father didn’t lose his company because Damian betrayed him.”

May you like

A pause.

“He lost because he trusted the wrong blood.”
