Chapter 10 - THE SECRET HER FATHER TOOK TO HIS GRAVE

The rain was falling heavily outside the courthouse.
Claire stood beneath the cold gray sky, staring at the document in her hands.
One sentence kept repeating in her mind.
“If Claire discovers the truth, she must never trust her own mother.”
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
For years, she had imagined the moment she would find the truth.
She imagined discovering who betrayed her father.
She imagined exposing Damian.
She never imagined that the person she needed to fear might be the woman who gave her life.
Her mother stood a few feet away.
Silent.
Broken.
“Tell me,” Claire said.
Her mother looked up.
“Claire…”
“No.”
Her voice trembled.
“I spent eleven years believing you were dead.”
Tears filled her mother’s eyes.
“Please.”
“I need the truth.”
The woman looked away.
And that small movement hurt more than any confession.
“You were there that night.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“The night your father died.”
The world seemed to stop.
“You told me you weren’t.”
“I lied.”
Claire stepped back.
“Why?”
Her mother closed her eyes.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Damian?”
A pause.
Then:
“Yes.”
Claire stared.
“But this says I can’t trust you.”
Her mother looked at the document.
“I know.”
“Why would Dad write that?”
Her mother’s face collapsed.
“Because he didn’t know if I could be saved.”
Claire felt anger burning inside her.
“Saved?”
Her voice became louder.
“Mom, you disappeared. You let me grow up thinking I had no family.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“No!”
Claire wiped away tears.
“You were trying to protect yourself.”
The words hurt.
But they were true.
Her mother didn’t argue.
That made it worse.
Michael stood nearby, watching quietly.
Finally, he spoke.
“Claire.”
She turned.
“What?”
“There’s something you don’t know.”
“What else?”
Michael hesitated.
“Your father didn’t create the backup plan because of Damian alone.”
Claire frowned.
“Then who?”
Michael looked at her mother.
“Because he discovered someone inside his own family was helping him.”
Claire looked between them.
“Who?”
Nobody answered.
Then Michael pulled out another folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Claire picked it up.
Her heart stopped.
It showed Damian.
Her mother.
And another man.
Sitting together.
Planning something.
The date was two months before Ethan Carter died.
Claire looked at her mother.
“Who is he?”
Her mother whispered:
“Your uncle.”
Claire froze.
“My father’s brother?”
She nodded.
“Robert Carter.”
Claire stared at the picture.
Her entire family tree suddenly felt like a lie.
Michael continued.
“Your father discovered Robert and Damian were working together.”
Claire looked confused.
“Then why blame my mother?”
Michael lowered his voice.
“Because your mother knew.”
Silence.
Claire looked at her mother.
“You knew they were working together?”
Her mother cried.
“I found out too late.”
“Then why didn’t you tell Dad?”
The answer broke her.
“Because Robert threatened you.”
Claire stopped.
“What?”
“He said if Ethan went after him, you would disappear.”
Claire felt sick.
Her mother continued:
“I made the worst mistake of my life.”
She looked at Claire.
“I stayed silent.”
Claire looked away.
All these years…
Everyone had been fighting their own battles.
But Claire was the one who lost everything.
Then Michael’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Claire watched him.
“What happened?”
Michael looked at her.
“They found Damian’s missing files.”
Claire exhaled.
“Finally.”
But Michael didn’t look relieved.
He looked terrified.
“Claire…”
“What?”
“The files don’t expose Damian.”
May you like
A pause.
“They expose your father.”
