Chapter 2 - THE LAWYER’S DARKEST SECRET

The ballroom turned into chaos.
People who had arrived to celebrate a wedding were now reading accusations of fraud, financial manipulation, and hidden contracts.
Damian stood perfectly still.
Too still.
Claire watched him carefully.
She expected anger.
She expected panic.
Instead, he looked calm.
That scared her more.
A man like Damian Whitmore didn’t survive this long because he lost control.
He survived because he always had another move.
Victoria grabbed his arm.
“Damian, tell me this isn’t true.”
He looked at his future wife.
“Victoria, you know me.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Her voice cracked.
“You said Ethan Carter trusted you.”
Damian sighed.
“He did.”
Claire laughed quietly.
“He trusted you until he discovered you were stealing from him.”
Damian turned sharply.
“You don’t know anything about what happened.”
“I know enough.”
Claire stepped closer.
“My father spent the last month of his life trying to expose you.”
Damian’s face hardened.
“Your father was sick. Confused.”
That sentence hit Claire harder than she expected.
Her eyes became cold.
“Don’t you dare.”
The room went quiet again.
“You don’t get to use his illness to cover your crimes.”
Damian smiled.
“You still think your father was a hero?”
Claire frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Damian walked slowly toward the center of the room.
“Your father wasn’t the man you think he was.”
Claire felt something tighten in her chest.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying he had secrets.”
The guests listened.
Damian knew exactly what he was doing.
He wasn’t defending himself.
He was attacking her.
“You disappeared after Ethan Carter died,” Damian said.
“Because someone threatened my mother.”
The words slipped out before Claire could stop them.
A few guests gasped.
Damian noticed.
“There it is.”
Claire realized her mistake.
Damian smiled.
“You came here looking for justice, but you’re hiding things too.”
Claire’s hands tightened.
“My mother disappeared because of people like you.”
“And you have proof?”
The silence answered for her.
Damian stepped closer.
“You have accusations. I have decades of reputation.”
Claire looked at him.
“For now.”
Damian laughed.
“You really think you can defeat me?”
Then a voice interrupted.
“Actually…”
Everyone turned.
An older man in a gray suit entered the ballroom.
Claire recognized him immediately.
Thomas Reed.
Her father’s former lawyer.
The man who had handled Ethan Carter’s final documents.
“Mr. Reed?” Victoria whispered.
Damian’s face changed.
“What are you doing here?”
Thomas walked toward Claire.
“Doing what I should have done eleven years ago.”
He handed Claire an envelope.
“My apologies, Claire.”
She looked confused.
“What is this?”
“The original inheritance file.”
Damian stepped forward.
“No.”
The entire room heard the fear in his voice.
Thomas looked at him.
“Yes.”
Damian’s expression finally broke.
Because he knew exactly what was inside.
Claire opened the envelope.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she looked up.
“You forged my father’s will.”
Nobody spoke.
Damian shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Thomas looked at the guests.
“The original document names Claire Carter as the sole heir to Carter Holdings.”
Victoria covered her mouth.
“My God…”
Damian’s voice became louder.
“This man is lying!”
Thomas calmly replied:
“No, Damian.”
He pulled out another document.
“You are the one who lied.”
Claire looked at the papers.
Then she saw something that made her heart stop.
A signature.
A signature she recognized.
Her mother’s.
Impossible.
Her mother had disappeared eleven years ago.
Damian noticed her reaction.
And smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Claire looked at him.
“What did you do?”
Damian leaned closer.
“The same thing I did to your father.”
Her blood ran cold.
“What?”
Damian whispered:
“I erased the people who stood in my way.”
Before Claire could respond, the ballroom doors opened.
Two police officers walked inside.
Everyone froze.
One officer held a document.
“Claire Carter?”
“Yes?”
“You are under investigation for illegally obtaining confidential company records.”
The room erupted.
Claire stared at Damian.
He had turned the entire situation around.
Damian smiled.
“Welcome to my world.”
The officer reached for her arm.
And then Claire saw something.
Something nobody else noticed.
The officer’s badge number.
It was fake.
Her eyes widened.
May you like
Because Damian wasn’t just fighting back.
He was trying to make her disappear.
