Chapter 4 - THE MOTHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

For eleven years, Claire Carter had lived with one painful truth.

Her mother was gone.

Not missing.

Not far away.

Gone.

That was what everyone told her.

That was what Damian Whitmore wanted her to believe.

But now…

She was standing in front of her.

Alive.

Claire couldn’t move.

The entire ballroom disappeared around her.

The guests.

The cameras.

The accusations.

The wedding.

Everything faded.

All she could see was the woman walking toward her.

“Mom?”

The word came out like a whisper.

The woman stopped.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Claire…”

That voice.

That exact voice.

The voice that used to sing her to sleep.

The voice that promised everything would be okay.

Claire’s hands started shaking.

“No.”

She stepped backward.

“No, this isn’t possible.”

Damian watched from across the room.

And for the first time, he looked completely in control.

Claire noticed.

Her heart sank.

Because that meant one thing.

He knew.

He had known her mother was alive.

“You knew,” Claire said.

Her voice was full of pain.

“You knew she was alive this whole time.”

Damian didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Claire turned toward her mother.

“Where have you been?”

The woman looked down.

“I wanted to come back.”

“Wanted to?”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“You had eleven years.”

Her mother closed her eyes.

“I was protecting you.”

“Protecting me?”

Claire’s voice cracked.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

The woman cried.

“If I came back, Damian would have found you.”

Claire looked at Damian.

“You were afraid of him?”

Her mother nodded.

“You don’t understand what he is capable of.”

Damian finally spoke.

“Careful.”

Everyone turned.

His calm voice filled the room.

“You’re making accusations without remembering the whole story.”

Claire looked at him with disgust.

“You kidnapped my mother.”

“No.”

Damian smiled.

“I saved her.”

Everyone froze.

Claire stared.

“What?”

Damian walked closer.

“Your mother knows the truth.”

He looked at the older woman.

“Tell her.”

Her mother looked terrified.

“Tell her what happened eleven years ago.”

Claire felt her stomach tighten.

“Mom?”

Her mother looked at her.

And the next words destroyed everything Claire believed.

“Your father wasn’t killed because of Damian.”

Silence.

Claire stopped breathing.

“What did you say?”

Her mother wiped away tears.

“Your father knew he was dying.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“He made choices.”

“No.”

“He hid things from you.”

Claire’s eyes filled with anger.

“You’re lying.”

Her mother looked broken.

“I wish I was.”

Damian stepped forward.

“Your father created a second company.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

“A secret company. Hidden accounts. Money transfers.”

Damian smiled.

“And when I discovered it, he tried to destroy me.”

Claire stared at him.

“You expect me to believe you?”

“No.”

Damian pointed at her mother.

“I expect you to believe her.”

Everyone looked at Claire’s mother.

The woman slowly nodded.

“I saw the documents.”

Claire felt betrayed.

Her entire life was built around the idea that her father was a victim.

Now everyone was telling her he was hiding something.

But then she noticed something.

A small detail.

Her mother wasn’t looking at Damian.

She was looking at Claire.

With fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Claire understood.

Her mother wasn’t telling the truth.

She was being forced to.

Claire walked closer.

“Mom…”

She whispered.

“Are you in danger?”

Her mother’s eyes widened.

For one second…

Only one second…

Claire saw the answer.

Yes.

Damian immediately interrupted.

“This emotional reunion is over.”

He looked at the fake officers.

“Take her away.”

The officers stepped forward.

But before they could reach Claire, her mother shouted.

“Wait!”

Everyone froze.

The woman looked at Damian.

“I’ll tell her everything.”

Damian’s face changed.

“No.”

Her mother stepped forward.

“I’m done being afraid.”

Claire watched as her mother reached into her purse.

And pulled out a small flash drive.

Damian went completely pale.

Claire noticed.

“What is that?”

Her mother looked at her.

“The proof your father died trying to protect.”

Damian moved instantly.

Too fast.

He rushed toward her.

But Claire grabbed her mother’s arm and pulled her back.

The flash drive fell to the floor.

Everyone watched.

Damian looked at the tiny device.

And whispered:

“That should have been destroyed eleven years ago.”

Claire picked it up.

May you like

And smiled.

“Then I guess you’re having a very bad night.”
