Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH ETHAN CARTER NEVER TOLD HIS DAUGHTER

Claire stood frozen inside the abandoned warehouse.
Robert’s final words echoed in her mind.
“The truth about who you really are.”
For years, she believed she knew herself.
Claire Carter.
Daughter of Ethan Carter.
The hidden heir.
The woman who had returned to reclaim her father’s company.
But now…
Everything she believed was breaking apart again.
Michael looked at her carefully.
“Claire.”
She didn’t answer.
“Claire, listen to me.”
She finally looked at him.
“What did my father hide?”
Michael was silent.
That silence told her everything.
“You knew.”
Michael lowered his head.
“I knew part of it.”
Her anger exploded.
“Everyone knew something except me!”
She threw the documents onto the table.
“My father. My mother. Damian. Robert. All of you were making decisions about my life while I was the only person left in the dark.”
Michael accepted her anger.
“You have every right to be angry.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“I have the right to know the truth.”
A voice came from the doorway.
“Then it’s time you heard it.”
Claire turned.
Her mother stood there.
Alive.
Again.
But this time, she wasn’t afraid.
She looked tired.
Like someone who had carried a secret too heavy for too long.
“Mom…”
Her mother walked inside.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire stared.
“That’s all you have to say?”
“No.”
She took a deep breath.
“I’m sorry I let you hate me.”
Claire’s expression changed.
“What?”
Her mother looked at Michael.
Then back at Claire.
“Your father did hide something from you.”
Claire waited.
The woman whispered:
“Because he wasn’t your biological father.”
The world went silent.
Claire couldn’t breathe.
“What?”
Her mother cried.
“Ethan raised you. Loved you. Protected you.”
She stepped closer.
“But he wasn’t the man who gave you life.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“I wanted to tell you.”
“No.”
“But Ethan stopped me.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
Her mother answered:
“Because the truth would have put you in danger.”
Michael looked away.
Claire felt numb.
“Who is my real father?”
Her mother hesitated.
And that hesitation was enough.
Claire whispered:
“Who?”
Her mother finally said the name.
“Robert Carter.”
The room became silent.
Claire felt sick.
Her uncle.
The man who betrayed her father.
The man who destroyed her family.
“No.”
Her mother nodded through tears.
“Yes.”
“Ethan knew?”
“Yes.”
Claire stepped backward.
“My whole life…”
She struggled to speak.
“My father knew?”
Her mother corrected her gently.
“Ethan was your father in every way that mattered.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Memories flooded back.
Ethan teaching her how to ride a bike.
Ethan reading stories before bed.
Ethan telling her she was his greatest gift.
Not once had he made her feel like anything less than his daughter.
Michael handed her another letter.
“He wrote this after discovering the truth.”
Claire opened it.
Claire,
Blood does not create family. Love does.
If you ever discover the truth, I hope you understand one thing.
I chose you.
Tears fell from Claire’s eyes.
Robert gave you life.
But I gave you a home.
Claire held the letter against her chest.
For the first time that night, she allowed herself to cry.
Then her phone rang.
A news alert appeared.
Her eyes widened.
BREAKING NEWS: Carter Holdings Files Emergency Lawsuit Against Claire Carter Claiming She Is Not The Legal Heir.
Claire looked at Michael.
“Robert moved already.”
Michael nodded.
“He’s going after your identity.”
Claire wiped her tears.
“Then I’ll fight.”
But Michael looked worried.
“Claire…”
“What?”
“The court hearing is tomorrow morning.”
She frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
Michael shook his head.
“Robert has influence everywhere.”
Claire looked at the news.
Then at Ethan’s letter.
And she realized something.

Robert didn’t want her money.
He wanted to erase her existence.
