CHAPTER 9: THE GRANDMOTHER WHO BUILT THE LIES

“Your mother.”
Clara’s words landed harder than any weapon.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The old Graves estate became completely silent.
Nathaniel stared at his daughter.
The daughter he had lost for twelve years.
The daughter he had dreamed of finding every night.
And now she was standing in front of him…
Accusing the woman who raised him.
“My mother is dead.”
Clara didn’t blink.
“That doesn’t mean she stopped controlling everything.”
Nathaniel’s expression changed.
“Watch your words.”
“No.”
Clara stepped closer.
“Not anymore.”
Her voice wasn’t angry.
That was what made it frightening.
She sounded like someone who had spent years preparing for this exact moment.
“I spent twelve years learning the truth while you spent twelve years believing a lie.”
Nathaniel looked at the files on the desk.
“What are those?”
Clara opened the folder.
“Everything she hid.”
I watched Nathaniel carefully.
This was the same man who made entire companies afraid.
But standing there…
He looked like a son again.
A son discovering that the person he trusted most had betrayed him.
“Who was your grandmother?”
I whispered.
Clara looked at me.
“Our grandmother was the person who built the Black Viper.”
The name made the room colder.
Nathaniel shook his head.
“No.”
Clara looked at him.
“Yes.”
“That organization existed before my family.”
“Wrong.”
She placed a document on the table.
“She created it.”
Nathaniel picked it up.
His hands became tense.
The signature at the bottom made his face lose all color.
Because he knew that handwriting.
He had seen it his entire childhood.
Eleanor Graves.
Nathaniel’s mother.
A woman known publicly as a generous philanthropist.
A woman who donated millions to hospitals.
A woman who appeared in magazines as one of the most respected women in the city.
But behind closed doors…
She was something else.
A strategist.
A manipulator.
A person who believed power belonged only to those willing to take it.
“She wanted control of Graves Holdings,” Clara said.
Nathaniel looked up.
“She owned half the company.”
“Half.”
Clara smiled bitterly.
“But she wanted all.”
I looked at Nathaniel.
“So your own family…”
He nodded slowly.
“My entire life…”
He stopped.
Because the realization was too painful to say.
Clara continued.
“She saw you as weak.”
Nathaniel looked at her.
“She thought I was weak?”
“She thought you cared too much.”
The words hurt him.
Because they were true.
Nathaniel cared.
That was the one thing his enemies never understood.
“You loved people,” Clara said.
“And she believed love was a weakness.”
Emily stepped forward.
“Clara, I tried to protect you.”
Clara turned toward her.
“No.”
Emily froze.
“You protected Ruby.”
The words cut deep.
“Because she was still innocent.”
Clara looked at me.
“And I was already lost.”
My heart hurt.
“Clara…”
She looked at me.
For a moment, the cold expression disappeared.
And I saw the little girl from the photograph.
My sister.
“I remember you.”
I froze.
“What?”
Clara walked closer.
“You were small.”
Her voice softened.
“You had a yellow blanket.”
I stared at her.
“You remember me?”
She nodded.
“You used to cry whenever I left the room.”
A tiny smile appeared.
“You would grab my finger.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“I don’t remember.”
“I know.”
Her smile disappeared.
“They made sure you wouldn’t.”
Nathaniel turned sharply.
“Who?”
Clara looked at him.
“Your mother.”
The room became silent again.
“What did she do?”
Clara looked down.
“She separated us.”
My mother covered her mouth.
“No…”
“Yes.”
Clara looked at Emily.
“You were supposed to take Ruby and run.”
Emily nodded slowly.
“I was.”
“But you didn’t.”
“I tried.”
Clara’s eyes became cold.
“You failed.”
The truth slowly came out.
Twelve years ago, Eleanor Graves discovered Emily’s secret.
She discovered Ruby existed.
She discovered Daniel Carter had proof against her.
And she made a decision.
She would erase every threat.
Daniel disappeared.
Emily was forced to run.
Clara was taken.
And Ruby was hidden.
Three children.
Three lives.
Destroyed because one woman wanted more power.
Nathaniel walked toward the window.
His reflection stared back at him.
For years, he blamed Emily.
For years, he searched for criminals.
For years, he never imagined the enemy was inside his own family.
“Where is she?”
Everyone looked at him.
Clara answered.
“Who?”
“My mother.”
Silence.
Then Clara said:
“She’s been waiting.”
Nathaniel turned.
“Waiting for what?”
Clara looked at Ruby.
“For the last piece.”
I felt a chill.
“What piece?”
Clara walked toward me.
She held a small box.
Old.
Black.
The same symbol was carved on it.
The silver snake.
“She believed you were the key.”
I stepped back.
“Me?”
Clara nodded.
“Because Daniel left something inside you.”
My face went pale.
“What are you talking about?”
Clara opened the box.
Inside was a small silver key.
Nothing else.
Nathaniel stared.
“That key…”
He recognized it.
“What?”
“That belongs to my father.”
Everyone froze.
Clara looked at him.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“It belongs to Daniel.”
Nathaniel looked confused.
“Why would Daniel have my father’s key?”
Clara answered quietly:
“Because Daniel discovered what your father hid.”
Suddenly, every phone in the room rang.
Nathaniel’s.
The guards’.
Emily’s.
Even Clara’s.
Everyone looked at the screens.
Unknown number.
Nathaniel answered.
A familiar voice came through.
Sebastian.
“You finally found the truth.”
Nathaniel’s eyes hardened.
“What do you want?”
A laugh.
“You still don’t understand.”
The voice became colder.
“The truth was never the prize.”
Nathaniel looked at Clara.
“Then what is?”
A pause.
Then Sebastian said:
“Ruby.”
My blood froze.
Nathaniel stepped in front of me.
“You won’t touch her.”
Sebastian laughed.
“You still think you can protect her.”
A pause.
Then:
“Look outside.”
Everyone turned toward the window.
And my heart stopped.
The entire estate was surrounded.
Black vehicles.
Armed men.
Hundreds of them.
Clara whispered:
“He’s here.”
Nathaniel stared into the darkness.
“Who?”
Clara answered:
“The man who started the war.”
A car door opened outside.
A figure stepped out.
And even from a distance…
Nathaniel knew exactly who it was.
Because the man walking toward the house…
Was supposed to have died twenty years ago.
Their father.
May you like
