CHAPTER 13: THE GIRL WHO WALKED INTO THE ENEMY’S HOUSE

“Bring me the girl, or he dies.”
Those six words were burned into my mind.
I couldn’t sleep.
I couldn’t eat.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nathaniel sitting in that dark room.
The man who had spent his whole life fighting enemies.
The man who had protected strangers.
The man who had spent only a few days knowing me…
But somehow made me feel like I had finally found my family.
Now he was trapped.
And the person who had taken him wanted me.
“No.”
Emily’s voice was firm.
“You are not going there.”
I looked at her.
“He will die if I don’t.”
“No.”
She grabbed my shoulders.
“Ruby, listen to me.”
Her eyes were full of fear.
“I have spent eight years protecting you.”
“Then trust me.”
The words surprised her.
Because they were the exact words she had always told me.
Trust me.
Stay close.
I know what’s best.
But this time…
I knew what was right.
“Nathaniel protected me.”
Emily looked away.
“He’s your father.”
I nodded.
“And he needs me.”
Clara stood near the window.
Silent.
Watching.
After everything…
She was the one person who understood.
Because she had been that child too.
The child who had to make impossible choices.
“You’re going.”
Emily looked at her.
“No.”
Clara didn’t look away.
“Yes.”
“Clara—”
“She already decided.”
The room went quiet.
I looked at my sister.
“How do you know?”
Clara gave a small sad smile.
“Because I made the same decision twelve years ago.”
Clara walked toward me.
For the first time since we met…
She didn’t look cold.
She looked like my sister.
“Ruby.”
I looked up.
“You need to understand something.”
“What?”
“Eleanor wants you because she thinks you’re a key.”
She paused.
“But she doesn’t know you.”
I frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“She thinks you’re like us.”
“Like you?”
Clara nodded.
“She thinks pain makes people weak.”
She touched my shoulder.
“But she’s wrong.”
“Why?”
“Because love makes people stronger.”
The words surprised me.
Because they sounded exactly like something Nathaniel would say.
The plan was simple.
Which meant it was dangerous.
I would go to Eleanor.
I would pretend I was scared.
I would pretend I wanted Nathaniel saved.
And while Eleanor focused on me…
Clara and Emily would find a way inside.
“Absolutely not.”
Emily shook her head.
“You’re eight.”
I looked at her.
“I’m also the reason everyone is fighting.”
“That is not true.”
“Isn’t it?”
She froze.
Because she knew.
If Eleanor wanted me…
People would keep getting hurt.
“I’m tired of running.”
My voice became quiet.
“I’ve been running my whole life and I didn’t even know it.”
Emily started crying.
“I just wanted you safe.”
“I know.”
I hugged her.
“And I love you.”
She held me tightly.
“But I need to do this.”
Two hours later…
I walked into the Graves family headquarters.
The same building where everything started.
The same place where my life changed.
But this time…
I wasn’t carrying a wallet.
I wasn’t an innocent child looking for help.
I was walking into the enemy’s home.
The guards opened the doors.
They already knew who I was.
Nobody stopped me.
Nobody questioned me.
That scared me more than anything.
Because they weren’t surprised.
They were waiting.
Eleanor sat at the end of a long conference table.
Like a queen.
She looked at me.
“Ruby Carter.”
I stood still.
“You wanted me.”
She smiled.
“Brave.”
I didn’t answer.
She studied me.
“You look just like your mother.”
“People say that.”
“But you have Nathaniel’s eyes.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Where is he?”
Eleanor smiled.
“Straight to the point.”
She stood.
“You know what I find interesting?”
“What?”
“You came here willingly.”
I looked at her.
“Because you threatened my father.”
A small smile appeared.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The reason Nathaniel failed.”
I frowned.
“He taught you compassion.”
She shook her head.
“That will destroy you.”
She led me through the building.
Past offices.
Past security rooms.
Past people who looked afraid.
Finally…
A door opened.
Nathaniel was inside.
My heart stopped.
“Dad.”
His head lifted.
The moment he saw me…
His expression changed.
Fear.
Anger.
Pain.
“Ruby.”
He stood immediately.
“No.”
I walked closer.
“I’m here.”
His eyes moved to Eleanor.
“You brought her here?”
Eleanor smiled.
“She came.”
Nathaniel looked at me.
“You shouldn’t have.”
I whispered:
“I couldn’t leave you.”
His eyes filled.
For a second…
He wasn’t a billionaire.
He wasn’t a powerful man.
He was just my father.
Eleanor walked around us.
“Beautiful.”
Nathaniel glared.
“You don’t get to enjoy this.”
She ignored him.
“Do you know why Daniel hid the evidence inside Ruby?”
I looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
“Because he knew everyone would search for documents.”
She tapped her finger.
“Computers.”
“Files.”
“Banks.”
“But nobody would search a child.”
Nathaniel looked confused.
“What evidence?”
Eleanor smiled.
“The evidence that can destroy the entire Graves empire.”
She brought a small device.
A scanner.
My heart raced.
“What is that?”
Eleanor smiled.
“Something that will reveal the truth.”
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“Don’t touch her.”
Eleanor laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
She looked at me.
“Ruby…”
She came closer.
“Do you know why you always had the same dream?”
I froze.
“What dream?”
“The rain.”
My breathing stopped.
“The voice.”
The memory returned.
The little box.
The hand.
The whisper.
“Ruby, never let them find this.”
Eleanor smiled.
“Because Daniel didn’t hide the evidence in your belongings.”
She touched the scanner.
“He hid it in your memory.”
The machine turned on.
A light scanned my face.
Nathaniel shouted:
“Stop!”
But then…
The screen changed.
Numbers appeared.
Files.
Images.
A hidden message.
Eleanor’s smile disappeared.
Because she saw something she didn’t expect.
The machine revealed a single sentence.
A message Daniel had recorded twelve years ago.
A message meant only for me.
The screen displayed:
“Ruby, if you are seeing this… it means Eleanor found you.”
Everyone froze.
Then Daniel’s voice filled the room.
“Listen carefully.”
A pause.
“Your father is not Nathaniel.”
Nathaniel looked at me.
My heart stopped.
Daniel’s voice continued:
“Because the man who raised you…”
A pause.
“Is not the man who betrayed us.”
The screen flickered.
Then the final message appeared.
A name.
The name that changed everything.
YOUR REAL FATHER IS STILL ALIVE.
Nobody spoke.
Not Eleanor.
Not Nathaniel.
Not me.
Because somewhere in the world…
The truth had been hiding.
And the person who knew everything…
Was still alive.
May you like
