CHAPTER 12: THE PERSON BEHIND THE BLACK VIPER

The room felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
Nobody moved.
Because the person standing in front of us was someone who should not have been there.
Someone who was supposed to be gone.
Someone whose name had been erased from the Graves family history.
Nathaniel stared at the figure in the doorway.
His face was pale.
His voice was barely a whisper.
“Mother…”
The woman smiled.
Not warmly.
Not like a grandmother seeing her family after years apart.
It was the smile of someone who had spent a lifetime winning.
Eleanor Graves stepped into the room.
Older.
Elegant.
Perfectly dressed.
Her silver hair was neatly styled.
Her posture was straight.
She looked nothing like the monster everyone described.
That was the terrifying part.
Monsters are easy to recognize.
The dangerous ones often look ordinary.
“I wondered how long it would take you to find this place.”
Nathaniel’s hands tightened.
“You’re alive.”
Eleanor smiled.
“Of course I am.”
“But everyone said you died.”
“Everyone believes what they are told.”
Her eyes moved around the room.
Then stopped on Clara.
“My granddaughter.”
Clara’s face turned cold.
“You don’t get to call me that.”
Eleanor didn’t react.
“You survived.”
Clara laughed quietly.
“Despite you.”
I held Nathaniel’s hand without realizing it.
Maybe because I was scared.
Maybe because I knew he was scared too.
The man who controlled an empire…
Was standing in front of the woman who created the nightmare.
“Why?”
Nathaniel finally asked.
His voice carried twelve years of pain.
“Why did you take Clara?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Because you became weak.”
Nathaniel stared.
“Weak?”
“Yes.”
She walked slowly around the room.
“You had everything.”
Money.
Power.
Influence.
Fear.
“But you wasted it.”
“On what?”
She looked at him.
“Love.”
The word came out like an insult.
“You loved your daughter.”
She pointed at Clara.
“You loved Emily.”
Then she looked at me.
“And you would have loved Ruby.”
Her expression hardened.
“I couldn’t allow that.”
My stomach tightened.
“You wanted him alone?”
Eleanor looked at me.
“You understand more than people realize.”
Nathaniel stepped between us.
“Don’t talk to her.”
Eleanor smiled.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The weakness.”
She looked at him.
“You always choose people over power.”
Nathaniel’s voice became cold.
“And you always choose power over people.”
For the first time…
Eleanor looked disappointed.
“After everything I taught you…”
“I learned what not to become.”
The room went silent.
Clara stepped forward.
“You ruined my life.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“No.”
“I lost my childhood.”
“You gained something more valuable.”
Clara’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“Strength.”
Clara laughed.
A painful laugh.
“You call that strength?”
“Yes.”
Eleanor walked closer.
“I removed your emotions.”
“I made you survive.”
Clara’s face changed.
Because deep down…
Those words hurt because they were partly true.
Eleanor had turned a little girl into someone who knew how to fight.
But she had stolen everything else.
Nathaniel looked at the letter in his hand.
“My father knew about you.”
Eleanor smiled.
“Your father knew many things.”
“He wrote that Sebastian wasn’t the enemy.”
“No.”
Nathaniel looked confused.
“Then why did Sebastian work with you?”
Eleanor’s smile disappeared.
“Because Sebastian was useful.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
She looked toward the hallway.
“Sebastian was never smart enough to lead.”
A pause.
“He was only angry enough to obey.”
Suddenly, footsteps echoed.
Someone appeared behind Eleanor.
Sebastian.
But this time…
He wasn’t smiling.
He looked different.
Broken.
Nathaniel noticed immediately.
“What happened to you?”
Sebastian said nothing.
Eleanor answered for him.
“He finally learned his place.”
Sebastian looked at her.
“You promised me.”
Eleanor turned.
“And you believed me.”
The words hit him.
Hard.
I realized something.
Sebastian wasn’t the mastermind.
He was another victim.
A dangerous one.
But still a victim.
Nathaniel looked at his brother.
“Why?”
Sebastian laughed bitterly.
“Because I was tired.”
“Tired of what?”
“Being second.”
The confession came out like poison.
“You were always the favorite.”
Nathaniel stared.
“Our father chose you.”
“Yes.”
Sebastian’s eyes filled with anger.
“You were the son who would inherit everything.”
A pause.
“And I was the son who had to watch.”
Eleanor smiled slightly.
“So I gave him a purpose.”
Sebastian looked away.
“I thought I was becoming powerful.”
His voice cracked.
“I didn’t realize I was becoming a weapon.”
A loud sound interrupted them.
A phone ringing.
Everyone looked.
It was Eleanor’s.
She answered.
Listened.
Then smiled.
“Excellent.”
Nathaniel narrowed his eyes.
“What?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“The final piece has arrived.”
My heart sank.
“What final piece?”
She looked directly at me.
“You.”
Nathaniel immediately moved.
“No.”
Eleanor sighed.
“You still don’t understand.”
She looked at me.
“Ruby is not important because she is your daughter.”
Silence.
“She is important because Daniel hid the evidence inside her.”
My face went pale.
“What?”
Emily stepped forward.
“No.”
Eleanor smiled.
“Yes.”
Nathaniel looked at Emily.
“What is she talking about?”
Emily looked terrified.
“I didn’t know.”
Eleanor laughed.
“You never understood Daniel’s plan.”
She walked toward me.
Nathaniel blocked her.
“You take one more step…”
Eleanor stopped.
Then smiled.
“You would protect her.”
“Yes.”
“Even if protecting her destroys everything you built?”
Nathaniel didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.”
For the first time…
Eleanor looked surprised.
Because Nathaniel had finally become the one thing she never wanted him to be.
A man who chose love over power.
Eleanor looked at the others.
“Take them.”
Suddenly, armed men entered from every doorway.
Too many.
The guards were surrounded.
Nathaniel fought.
Clara fought.
Chaos exploded through the old house.
Emily grabbed my hand.
“Ruby, run!”
We moved toward the hidden tunnel.
But before we reached it…
A man blocked our path.
Sebastian.
I froze.
He looked at me.
For a moment, I thought he would stop us.
Then he whispered:
“Go.”
Emily stared.
“What?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“Go before I remember who I was.”
He turned away.
Holding back the men behind him.
We escaped into the tunnel.
But before the door closed…
I heard Eleanor’s voice echo through the house.
“Run all you want.”
A pause.
“You will come back.”
Her voice became colder.
“Because the truth is inside Ruby.”
Hours later…
We reached a safe location.
But Nathaniel was missing.
Clara was injured.
And Emily was crying.
Because the last message we received…
Was from Eleanor.
A picture.
Nathaniel sitting in a dark room.
Alive.
But captured.
And beneath the photo were six words.
“Bring me the girl, or he dies.”
I stared at the message.
My hands shook.
Nathaniel Graves had spent his entire life protecting people.
Now…
The entire world was waiting to see if an eight-year-old girl would risk everything to save him.
And I already knew my answer.
Because he was no longer just Nathaniel Graves.
He was my father.
May you like
